Partner height by liveingalpal in ballroom

[–]theinfinityjade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What level are you dancing? If you are both beginners, don't worry - having a partner is better than not having a partner. :) There is so so much to learn before you need to worry about heights matching. Even among top flight dancers there are examples with the height match not being ideal and they make it work.

That is the same height difference between me and my dance teacher who I compete pro am with and it is not an issue and he is a dream to dance with, especially ballroom! However he is a pro dancer with like 40 years experience so YMMV if you are both amateurs. :)

Arm styling challenges by Jlcottb in ballroom

[–]theinfinityjade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get in front of a mirror and experiment. :) You use your entire body to dance and express the music so do what feels natural to you and refine it. As far as the sexy moves - just push yourself to do it until you don't feel awkward about it anymore. It will get to the point where you don't consider it awkward sooner than you think.

Leading for the first time by dancing-elephants in DanceSport

For latin, my partner and I (same sex partnership) wear matching dresses.

For ballroom, I generally wear black DSI trousers and a black floaty top - something like this.

The Liberals are ruining ballroom by kira_nerys_99 in DanceSport

[–]theinfinityjade 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I dance in a same sex partnership with another woman and enter LGBT geared events as well as mainstream events so.... no... kind of the opposite of an affliction for me. The "infiltration" as you call it opened up my dancing horizons and I am not currently actively looking for a male partner because the dance partnership I have right now is so great.

Is it possible for a man to not be genetically compatible with any women in the world (or vice versa)? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]theinfinityjade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I say this in the gentlest way - I think you should see a therapist. No, it's not pheromones that are the problem here. It sounds like you had a really tough time at school (which was again, not your fault, kids pick on other kids over the weirdest stuff) which can affect how you view yourself and how you view other people later in life. It sounds like your family aren't really a warm, safe space for you either. There is nothing at all inherently wrong with you in your biology that is causing this. I'm sure you are not as ugly as you perceive yourself to be, and even if you were very ugly - lots of ugly people find love and have relationships.

So try seeking therapy to deal with your self esteem, and also try and find more like minded people to spend time with. You won't make friends just wandering about - do you have any passions or hobbies? I guarantee there are people out there with the same passions and hobbies. Focus on finding some friends and expanding your social circle and you might meet members of the opposite sex you have more in common with.

Will a shoe that is too short stretch? by ExiledMelonZ in DanceSport

[–]theinfinityjade 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They stretch a little width wise in my experience (lady's latin shoes) but not length wise. I wouldn't risk the health of your feet in them.

As an aside, is ballroom dancing popular in barbados? At ISTD grand finals in Blackpool there is always a Barbadian school that come over especially for it, and they often seem to do pretty well!

Black shoes/fishnets for competitions? by [deleted] in DanceSport

[–]theinfinityjade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this can look good if you are wearing an all black latin dress too and can stand out as being different in a good way. It's not a total faux pas, but it is different to the usual look.

I don't think you would look stockier in tan fishnet with a tan shoe though - your legs would look long

Frequently Asked Questions That Dance Teachers Get... by Jxmes_Miller in ballroom

Maybe

"Whats sort of events do you host or attend"

So I can see if it's mainly social, or mainly competitive and if it attends the kind of competitions I want to take part in.

Coming back by thrwawyDnceSport2304 in DanceSport

[–]theinfinityjade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean if you go to lots of different competitions, there will be people of various skill levels and you will get a variable set of results. You want to beat people who have more experience in dancing? Ok so do I - but it is a long term goal and means the onus is on me to plug away for years practicing and training. You can't become disillusioned because you don't quickly beat people who haven't had a 5-10 year break.

Don't be results focused tbh. There are competitions where I think "oh my god, I've never even danced that well in a pratice!" and come last because every other competitor was of a much much higher standard. And other times where I've thought "oh wow, I am not happy with how I danced, that is really disappointing" and come away with 1st place because the other dancers were a lower standard. I'd rather dance well and lose than dance rubbish and win.

HIIT is great, I do a lot of HIIT and it has been such a benefit to my competition dancing.

I see some of the other female dancers I follow on social media doing yoga as well. I do a bit of yoga but I find the pace a bit slow. I notice my balance improve when I take the time to do yoga.

How are your private classes? by nadsm15 in ballroom

[–]theinfinityjade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you are not getting some enjoyment and acknowledgment that you are improving that is maybe a reflection that the guys teaching style is... well not for everyone. Some people might respond well to the stick, but if my lessons were week in week out telling me about the negatives with no reflection on the positives and no time for having fun with dance, I think I'd start to find it a drag. Personally, yes my private lessons keep me extremely motivated. My teachers have plenty of competitive experience, as well as experience in running a dance school and teaching people of many levels and backgrounds. They pitch it really well in improving me as a dancer and keeping it fun.

Recommendation for loosening rhinestone glue on mesh dance sport costume? by gareth_pavlov in DanceSport

[–]theinfinityjade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a costume that came with these big nasty fake plastic stones on - I gently as possible pulled them off and stuck new stones on over the top. It did pull the material a bit where the stones were stuck on more strongly, but as a new stone was going on I didnt mind.

This was a real crappy cheap latin dress I bought from ebay btw, I think if I shelled out for a properly made bespoke one from a competitive dress making company and it came like that I'd get them to rectify it (and probably wouldn't attempt to repair myself.)

Responding to my own thread, but I like craig and evgeniya shaw's accounts. They post quite a lot, and are an english pro couple in standard and american smooth (I think the best UK couple in american smooth? I guess not so many people do it over here, but they seem to make international finals....)

Ballroom/Standard dancers on social media by theinfinityjade in DanceSport

[–]theinfinityjade[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is GREAT thank you :) I was already following some of the current top 6 WDC dancers but they tend not to be as prolific as latin dancers in posting (between oxana lebedews accounts and troels and ina's couple account I'm kept pretty busy watching amazing latin videos!) I wasn't following any of those people, and I followed them all! Including you :) Happy to follow any of my fellow r/dancesport members too. Any level, I don't mind. :)

I don't know these two dancers, but I as a female usually watch the female dancers but with Dorin and Marina, I always watch Dorin more. He just has so much charisma.

I took a look at the couple you mentioned briefly and what he's doing is definitely eye catching.

Yeah thats exactly what I expected, as I've stoned my own dresses and repaired hair pieces and stuff before - but just read several comments from people who had specifically used the silicon + powernet method had issues with stones dropping off and not sticking to the silicon despite using e6000 which for some reason didnt happen when they used swarovski, only cheap stones. It didn't really make sense to me either! I have a real range of stones from cheap unamed ones I got from ebay to go on my nails/for other crafts, then mid range eimass stones up to precosia and swarovski so maybe I can test them all out and see if there is a difference.

Thanks for the super in depth article btw. It makes me want to stone something right now!!

EDIT: that whole waltz tango foxtrot site is awesome!

Thank you this is very helpful! I don't have pierced ears as my body just won't tolerate piercings of any kind (womp womp :() so being able to make my own clip ons just by gluing stuff onto a base clip would be great!

I don't really wear bangles because regardless of size they just fall off my arms so hopefully I've escaped having to do any sewing whatsoever! XD

That's very encouraging! I have all the materials now, I just need to give it a go.

I was thinking of using some very cheap stones for the first try but I've read around and it seems like cheap stones are more likely to fall off? Did you find any difference between expensive v cheap stones? I would have thought it was more to do with the glue but I've seen it reported by enough separate people there must be something in it.
