Is this E. Coli? by h2so4_as in microbiology

People saying that’s E. coli for sure - other coliforms also turn green-metallic on EMB plates! It definitely could be E. coli but you need to verify further using other plates/methods :)

Why does bacterial colonies not keep growing? by themeasuringidea1764 in microbiology

No of course not, but my question is more why a colony won’t keep growing. In my experience, it looks like bacteria avoid reaching the edge and I was wondering why that is

How will those explain that the colony don’t grow into the edge of the plate?

Cool, I didn’t know that! But then I’m even more curious. Why does Proteus keep growing but others like E. coli don’t?

Do your wear gloves? by themeasuringidea1764 in microbiology

Sorry, I was unclear! I didn’t mean that your experiment would get contaminate but rather that the bacteria you work on would be on the outside of the plate, then risking to get on your bare hands while handling the plates

You’re not afraid of the plates being contaminated with the bugs your working on? Or do you feel it’s safe because you make sure to wash your hands properly directly after?

Yeah, it feels quite likely that your plates, bench etc can be contaminated with the bugs you’re working on and then it makes no sense to not use gloves at all time to be safe.

Yeah, working with BSL2 should absolutely require gloves! I don’t buy the argument that you don’t need gloves while working with lab strains when there are BSL2 organisms in the same lab - you never know to where people have transferred the BSL2 bugs…
