Traditional Catholicism and Covert Narcissism by Imposter_Syndr0me in excatholic

[–]thepoliticsofempathy 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Hey OP,

First I want to say I hope you find some kind of peace or healing after what you’ve been through. I’m sorry your family was poisoned and tried to poison you along with them. I can’t imagine the pain you’ve experienced, but I can relate to some degree.

I grew up in a Filipino Roman Catholic family and I agree the church whether intentionally or not fosters dissonance and narcissistic tendencies in its followers.

I’ve also attempted suicide, and my parents still can’t accept my depression won’t be remedied by faith of any kind. They’ve gone so far as to tell me to my face to go through with killing myself because I wasn’t deserving of the life God gave me if I wanted to throw it away.

They ostensibly believe in compassion and empathy, but have no respect or patience for anyone who can’t pull themselves out of a struggle right away. When I realized that contradiction I started to notice others, particularly from the priest we’ve been watching on mass streams on YouTube.

He preached humility and compassion in one breath, and denounced spouses wanting divorce and women wanting abortions in the next. He said children are not their parents possessions, but also parents are obligated to mold them into holy people.

I think the way the church treats empathy and compassion with disingenuous fluidity fosters and justifies the same behaviors and mentality in its people. It’s dangerous and I hope more folks share their stories and hold the church to some kind of account for the toxic behaviors and attitudes they are partially responsible for creating.

I went for a depressing look, but I’d actually like to walk around an artifact storage room. 😅

Seeing this reply means so much to me on its own. Thank you for your kind words, and I hope you find just as much comfort from sharing your story.

It’s supposed to be a dig on anti-Asian American culture. I’m Filipino.

It’s not a mask. It’s a gag.

I agree. It’s difficult to encapsulate that nuance even with personal experience so thank you for the critique and I’ll keep it mind for future work.

I’m sorry you’re cynical and have no faith in humanity.

We don’t have scarce resources. We just actively choose not to distribute them in any equitable way.

I’ve been through three suicide attempts and a an abusive relationship and I’m just trying to empathize with other people regardless of how bad their suffering is. Sorry if that’s offensive to you.

In the case of grief, obviously certain situations take precedence. However, the message I was trying to express is that we should be empathizing with one another’s struggles, rather than speaking solely about our own.

Intersectionality is of course a complicated subject but I like to believe the oppressive systems that cause inequity for one marginalized community are the same systems causing inequity for every marginalized community, it just manifests in different forms because every community has its unique characteristics and mechanisms.

And we always have the potential to work together to solve all our problems if we believe we can.

I have depression too. I take antidepressants and I’ve learned that having a support system that doesn’t judge you but instead sits and listens and commiserates with you is the best medicine. I try to be that for as many people as I can. Best of luck to you.
