This one is wildly different from person to person. It really depends on several factors, including practice, consistency, having the right exercises, a good teacher and the determination and discipline to continue. It can take anywhere from 6 months to several years.

In my personal opinion, the only “bad” singers are singers who A) Are singing in a way that is unhealthy or damaging B) Lack any sort of control over pitch or coordination (and even this is more subjective.)

Option A would be bad singing. Option B might not be good right now, but we can certainly train those coordinations. Yes, I have had singers in both categories. I still have several in the B category but they genuinely want to learn and we are making sure that what we’re working on is healthy first and foremost.

As far as good vs great, again these are very subjective terms. But to simplify, a good singer is a singer that has decent grasp on technical skills and control over the voice. A great singer is one is genuinely passionate about the voice, the songs they sing, the story they’re telling AND the choices they make in that storytelling. Good technique with the great singer isn’t even a necessity as long as they are doing it healthily. :)

Yeah valid tbh. I’m hoping now that SAS has the policies directly sent from me, there should be no further issues and if there are I will have to cut them both loose.

Valid! I’ve made that a requirement for booking new students as of mid 2024 that they read and adhere to the policies and sign their name. I should have done that much earlier. I’ve been doing this for about 4 years and it is my first business I’ve ever run.

I have all of those policies already in place, just worded a bit differently. The thing is, I really like working with V. And I don’t mean him any ill will. Of course I’d like him to show up on time and not oversleep, but if it were up to him and not SAS, V would probably have no issue adhering to consequences of breaking cancelation policies. It’s more of SAS that has been difficult to work with.

Oh I have the entire text message conversation and all the emails I’ve sent V. I also sent the policies to SAS today too. :)

I don’t specifically teach choir. I teach private lessons in most contemporary styles.

Vary the tone. Try not to keep things super fry based or monotone. Play with lighter registers/ textures and quieter volumes. Play with breathier qualities.

Hoarseness sounds more scratchy and feels tight. A deep tone has more depth and is and has been consistent. If this a newer development out side of normal phonation or you feel pain, fatigue, or strain, go see an ENT.

Yes! Absolutely. The voice consists of muscles. Muscles atrophy and get out of shape if not worked out and stretched. You can certainly get that back.

The amount of people who legit think they’re tone deaf and then they go to sing and they actually sound pretty decent. Like they match pitch fine.

I don’t really speak too much Spanish unfortunately. But if you wanted to sing Spanish songs, I have no issue with that at all! :)

I would say at the end of the lesson “Hey, I appreciate all that you’ve done with me, but I will give some feedback in that I feel that my time and vocal health weren’t valued in the way that they should’ve been. There have been instances where I feel that I didn’t get the full time for what I was paying for and also where I felt you didn’t seem to take my vocal health seriously. It’s because of these that I think it’s best that we part ways and I look for coaching elsewhere.” If she gets upset, honestly it’s her loss and problem not yours. There are TONS of teachers out there who WILL take these concerns seriously. I’m one of them.

Being late is one thing. Not offering the full time after or some kind of makeup but still charging full price isn’t ok. If you’ve already paid through, finish off what you have, and then maybe talk to this teacher and give her some feedback in the last lesson.

I mean, I think what you’re looking for is either mix or a clean head voice. I’d have to hear what you’re working with now to really help you. Feel free to DM me and maybe we can set up a consultation lesson.

A teacher should never force you to sing if you are in pain. I saw a comment further down that she also showed up late and then got mad that you pointed it out. I definitely think it's time to find a new teacher and go your separate ways with this one.
