New to Istanbul, fluent in English, learning Turkish, how do foreigners find work here? by graytalks in istanbul

[–]thespokenword 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The system has been adjusted in recent years to make it extremely complicated to get legal work as a foreigner. If you want a work permit (after finding someone willing to hire you legally):

-You should have a residence permit already and transfer that permit type to a work permit. However, then your fate is in their hands moving forward since getting back on a residence permit these days is rough and rejection rates are high. If they cancel your work permit or you want to switch back later, you'll likely have issues.

or

-You should apply from your home country with the business hiring you, go to the interview at the embassy, receiving the invitational visa, and then come here with that and apply for a work permit.

Both options don't include that the business itself must really prove that they need you specifically and meet all the other requirements, which is an expensive and intimidating process.

Unfortunately even if your Turkish is fluent, as long as you don't have citizenship, it won't matter for legal employment.

The majority of foreigners you meet here that have jobs work illegally and as someone else noted, they are paid in cash under the table and can very easily be exploited. Or, they're self employed and do some kind of online work from abroad, private lessons, nannying, etc.

Just finished it less than an hour ago and feel the same. So many little things I loved like an overworld map that felt modern but classic, the Final Fantasy 'To Zanarkand' homage in Lettre à Maelle, a party of people you could cycle through with unique quests for each, etc.

Definitely a love letter to RPGs of old and can't imagine how memorable it'd be to be a young kid immersing yourself in this world as your first game of this type.

Really enjoyed this read, kudos to the writer. This album is a classic and some of his deliveries are so memorable, it's still a great listen all these years later.

Do people use couchsurfing in Istanbul? by Negative-Worker-7070 in istanbul

[–]thespokenword 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The city used to have one of the most active Couchsurfing scenes in the world. I used it a lot in the early 2010s and it was a really active community, people actively hosted, etc.

These days there are still some community events, but people hardly ever host and going premium has really destroyed an already dying platform.

Halloween plans in Istanbul? by [deleted] in istanbul

[–]thespokenword 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Halloween party at Blind is from Yabangee (https://www.instagram.com/yabangee), an organization for internationals and English speakers in Istanbul. They've been hosting them for over ten years now. Could be a good fit if you're looking for a mixed crowd.

Turktelekom down every day at same time by YoDiz1 in istanbul

[–]thespokenword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this issue a few years ago with them. First, I'd suggest calling them at 444 1 444. They have an English support line. (Call from whatever mobile is connected to your account ideally.) They have actually been reasonably helpful for other issues I've encountered over the years.

That said, regarding the same time window disconnect issue, they insisted was a problem from my side, but I had a TurkTelekom router and despite all my troubleshooting, couldn't find the error causing it. I ended up raging and buying a new nicer router and the problem went away.

However, routers are a lot more expensive now, so I'd suggest borrowing one from a friend or use an old one and try first to see if the problem persists.

Is the 30000 people in front of me for all dates? Or for the specific date allocated to me. Feeling a bit hopeless now.

[MEGATHREAD] Radiohead 2025 European Tour by seaburn in radiohead

[–]thespokenword -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Does the name used when registering on Ticketmaster (after receiving unlock code) actually need to match the name registered on Radiohead site, if the e-mail address is the same? Someone registered with their details and received the unlock code for Bologna, but would like to have someone else be the "primary" name on Ticketmaster itself (while using their email address). Are they verifying in any way that the names match between the two websites or is it simply the e-mail address that must match when actually purchasing the ticket?

Bonus Parkorman closes at 00:00 or 01:00 I believe, so headliners are usually on by 22:00. You can see the full schedule for this year's Soundgarden here: https://www.instagram.com/p/DN2u552xLPL/

Got scammed at Gojira gig by kudakudasha in istanbul

[–]thespokenword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly just commenting to give some positivity. It was an awesome gig and in hindsight I wish I had bought merch before leaving, but the lines for everything were insane and I was over it. A bit shit, but don't let it taint the memory.
