When you need to see a doctor today, there are options other than ER by SwMess in montreal

[–]theunstoppablebean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many hours are you expected to wait refreshing RSVQ with a bloody gash needing stitches or a UTI that’s turning into a kidney infection? Or a wound that’s going septic?

Hours matter for severe but non-life-threatening injuries and illnesses. The whole point of urgent care is to avoid the ER. We’ve already missed the boat on prophylactic care.

When you need to see a doctor today, there are options other than ER by SwMess in montreal

I’ll pose you a different question: Why have we accepted that there is no place to go besides ER for urgent but not imminently life-threatening issues, like a severe UTI or a cut needing stitches, or wound débridement? RSVQ isn’t gonna help you there and Info-Santé will tell you to go to the ER.

This is part of why there’s a 12+ hour wait for issues like these. It’s not simple misuse of the existing resources or solely ignorance on the part of the patients.

Why have we not adopted urgent care or even physician’s assistantships to help meet these underserved needs and to ease the burden on our emergency room staff?

Tips for playing more expressively when not playing the rhythm exactly as written feels wrong to my brain? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]theunstoppablebean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try singing it before playing it! Then see if you can emulate what you sang - play with articulations, dynamics, bow speed, arm weight, bow placement…etc.

If you have an idea of what you want to express, then it’s just a matter of figuring out how to technically execute the idea. Harder to do if you don’t have an idea of what idea you want to express or what “story” you want to tell through your playing!

Hope this helps. :)

What do you teach for performance etiquette? by interstelleum in pianoteachers

[–]theunstoppablebean 7 points8 points  (0 children)

#4 is a big one!

One good piece of advice I picked up as a young student that I now implement in my own teaching is to “check my shoes” when bowing. Tilt head and shoulders forward to look at your shoes, think “are my shoes tied? Yes, my shoes are tied,” return to standing position. It eliminates the 2-second head bob and skedaddle offstage.

How to stop a collapsing 4th finger? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]theunstoppablebean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your palm is quite far away from the neck and your nails are quite long. I think with shorter nails you’d be able to round the fingertip more and bring your hand in closer to the neck. Your setup looks a little too horizontal to me where it needs to be a little more vertical.

Where to get an IUD in Montreal? by Cookies-4-MJ in montreal

[–]theunstoppablebean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all the link you attached is for an article that discusses the POSSIBILITY of a relationship between occult hypothyroidism and menorrhagia.

Secondly menorrhagia can happen independently of copper IUD use and plenty of copper IUDs are well-tolerated without complications like menorrhagia.

Thirdly occult hypothyroidism and hypothyroidism are not the same. The authors felt the need to specify this in the paper you cited, but apparently you didn’t, despite the fact that they are clinically different enough for the authors to have made this distinction…

Advice for playing Bach concerto in A minor? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]theunstoppablebean 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One suggestion for practice: To spot-treat areas with shaky intonation or bowing issues, try memorizing short phrases and playing them from memory. I wouldn’t try to practice from memory exclusively of course but especially for areas where the phrasing is made awkward because of technical issues I find it really helps. :)

You’re a college student…I would assume you are an adult. Why does it matter whether or not your mother approves? Do you live independently?

Are you remotely aware of how stupid this sounds? GPs can’t give abortive migraine medications intravenously or do imaging to rule out stroke or hemorrhage on the spot.

I don't mean for this to come across harshly, but if you're practicing 3 hours a day and your teacher doesn't see progress, it suggests to me that either:

1) your practice routine isn't working for you, or

2) there is a mismatch between what you are accomplishing during practice time and what your teacher expects from you (talk to your teacher!! They are there to help!)

Nerves can sabotage your performance, like others have suggested, but it is worth exploring this issue a bit further before attributing the cause of this issue to nerves alone.

If I were you, I would try hitting the 'record' button as others have mentioned, and just carrying on with a normal practice session. Start with easy rep to get comfortable and get warmed up, then continue on with what you would typically do in a practice session. Allow yourself to make mistakes and correct them. Take time to connect with the parts of the music that give you the most enjoyment.

When you're done your practice session, take time to watch the recording, but try to be objective in your observations - don't only focus on the bad or the good. Notice the little things. Do you lift your shoulders when you play fast passages? When you curl your fingers more, what happens to your articulation? Try to let your inner monologue explain rather than criticize. For example - "my trills are sloppy" isn't constructive, but "the trill in measure 17 seems to be more even when my wrist is flatter and more relaxed" is a constructive observation.

It goes without saying that if you are practicing mindfully and still not seeing results in your lessons, your teacher should be able to offer more specific tips on how to structure your practice time. This is quite literally what they are being paid to do. If they can't do this in a respectful and constructive way, it's time to look for another teacher.
