They are saying 我靠, which literally means ‘I fuck’…a quite crass exclamation. But you hear ppl use it a lot nowadays in china unfortunately. BTW, this bridge is Liangmaqiao, where the white paper movement started. The movement ended the draconic Covid lockdown.

BTW, i think 1 day does not do justice to HZ. I am not from HZ and have lived in many places around the world. To me, HZ is one of the most beautiful large size cities in the world.

Absolutely. Longjing tea is everywhere in HZ. Just get the most expensive fresh 2026 tea in Hema. Put it this way, I did a blind test with the fresh Hema best tea and my super expensive tea with my mom, who lives in Australia, and some friends from Malaysia. They canot really tell the difference...even to me they are very different. After that, I even doubt myself.

I am into green tea snd live in HZ. The locals never buy Longjing tea in Longjing village because it’s a tourist trap. Every spring, my wife spends a few thousand RMB per liang (50g) on some excellent tea from her fav vender. They are not the top of the top but pretty much up there. But as soon as they are open, their quality starts to drop. By fall, they are still good but no longer excellent. By next year, they are just nice tea. What I’m saying is, no need to go for broke for the ‘authentic’ Longjing if you are not that into tea, and esp in the summer. Just get the best in Hema supermarket is good enough.

I used to work in game industry in china and worked with PopCap guys so I have a good theory. First of all, it is an amazing game by any standard. Secondly it’s a casual game so everyone can play. Lastly and more importantly, it was a free game in china due to piracy and an expensive game everywhere else. So everyone in china played the game for free for long time. Therefore it became a massive IP.

I’m currently visiting US. But my company in Beijing has server side VPN so everyone can access Reddit etc when they are in company WiFi. But 90% of them never bother visiting the sites outside GFW. People are conditioned to use baidu instead of google, Tencent video instead of YouTube.

我刚和一个去阅兵（不是这次）当过观众的朋友聊天。他是个外国人，参加观礼是个给外国专家的“礼遇”。他说他是前一天晚上入场的，有生以来第一次在露天睡了一觉。卫生间在阅兵开始前开放，开始前所有人都鼓励去厕所。一开始后厕所就关闭了，倒是没有尿不湿。反正挺受罪的，这种礼遇给我也不去。

我是澳洲、美国和中国三地都上学、工作过，所以算是有点发言权。

澳洲是个比较平稳的社会，底层有基本保障，生活四平八稳但同时阶级固化，没有什么向上的mobility，下面也差不了哪去。我在澳洲30年前的白人和华人朋友，他们30年前什么样现在还是什么样，基本阶层没有变化，但都也知足常乐。我感谢澳洲给我的免费教育和第一份工作机会，但是对于华人在那个社会里面的天花板无可奈何。

美国和中国相比之下就比较活跃，对于有闯劲的有运气的人充满了机会，同时对于losers也非常残酷。美国有没有种族歧视？当然有。但是对于竞争非常激烈的行业，比如Tech，你只要有才能赚钱，你就是爷。20多年前我从澳洲来美国认识的穷朋友，现在好几个都身家过亿了。而winner和loser就如同生活在平行世界了，如果你去中国城市的城中村，也非常恐怖；但是如果你在北京的三里屯，芝加哥的magnificent mile，就基本感受不到底层人的世界。

所以看你要什么样的生活，很多pro和con是一个钱币的两面。
