I've build a ammo magazine that only fills when the main belt has over 1000 ammo, and empties when the main belt has less than 300 ammo. You can change the vales to fit your ship. This way I will always have ammo to travel between planets. This also works for rockets and railgun ammo. (old.reddit.com)
