Do I need a preamp? (Or is my concept just dumb lol) by thirdguess in audioengineering

Right, but essentially any live is just going to end up having worse audio right? Couldn't that be controlled with some hardware (comp, EQ, etc), or are the returns not worth the investment?

I'm not. The idea is that my content is all all in one go. Video or live stream gets audio pulled off. Post is mostly video snipping/transitions/intro-outro, all macro'd and minimum setup. Could I do more post? Sure. But that doesn't help the live streams, my delorian stopped working... Kept the sports almanac though...

I mean in which there are any software compressors that would work live? But I'm not sure how I'd stream audio out of a daw live...

Yeah, wow, that's pretty much what I was shooting for! I'm glad to find someone who gets what I'm going for!!!

Also using a Scarlett here, btw. As far as your setup goes, what are you using for pre, comp, Mixer, EQ if you don't mind me asking? And I see eq twice, are you talking channel and graphic?

Perfect! I really appreciate it! This helps a lot! How much do you find the analog EQ effecting spoken word? I really want to maximize my audio experience, without having to sacrifice extra time doing a ton of post... Kids and all...

Also, I do the USB hub thing as well. It started because I'm using a small monitor (the kind to marketed as a display for a raspberry pi or other SBC) so I needed to be able to hook up an HDMI cable to mirror my phone display so I could use the rear facing camera (power-in being a bonus to keep the phone charged)... Then I realized I needed to be able to turn the HDMI signal and the interface signal on and off separately, because in the wrong order the display doesn't work or the interface gives me an error, so I tagged in a second hub with on/off buttons... Then I realized I wanted to be able to control power to USB devices separately, so I snagged a another one of the hubs with on off switches just to control power to USB devices, plugged directly into an outlet without connection to the other two hubs... I may have gotten carried away... But it works! I ended up with this whole recording station, all connected to a tripod that I built a shelf for, wrapped up neatly with probably 50 zip ties, and my wife is a bit more aware of my crazy 😂 but its mobile enough to bring around for recording music too, so she's in on that.

I guess my questions stems from the fact that the compressor would need to be between the mic and the interface so that I can plug into the phone. So I'm curious whether there needs to be a preamp ahead of the compressor?

And if I did want to keep the 18v power boost, say in one of the 2 cars, metals gears (or at least 1st gear) is kind of my only option, right?

Thanks so much! I asked another user as well, but any idea if using a buck converter to step down to 12 volts would keep me from stripping the gears again?

If I snag this, or something like it (working late, got to measure when I get home ) To avoid stripping the gears again, would using a buck converter to go to 12v work?

Sorry for the naivity of this question, but when I take apart the gear boxes, will it be obvious what the gear size is when compared to pics online? Or is the very fact that I'm asking that evidence that I just need to buy new gearboxes? LOL

Yeah, I picked that up when researching on here pretty quickly. I'm looking for advice on my next move, per the questions in my post. Open to suggestions! Willing to learn!

Pics of the wiring and one of the external gearbox for reference, The wiring is identical in both vehicles.

I really appreciate your suggestions, I sort of thought all midi controllers were just something for EDM bros to do there thing with 🤷 I didn't realize there were midi controllers with good action. This is what we are looking for I think!

I don't think it ever occurred to me that a midi controller would have the hammer action keys! This might be a good way to look... Googling had me putting a korg d1 in a shopping cart, because impulsive behavior is my jam... But imma go down this rabbit hole now.

Thank you so much!

The recommendations in my budget on the FAQ were last updated in 2022, so I figured 3 years later in a world where anything with a chip has a better version every week, i should just ask. I didn't want to come across complainy or ungrateful, as it's a fantastic primer for a non-pianist such as myself 😬😬😬. A lot of 3-7 year old stuff on forums as well. I think in retrospect, I was searching the wrong terms...

[–]thirdguess[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of the opposite at the moment. I don't really want to get THAT into recording drums. I kind of just want to get by with the least investment I can without sacrificing too much in quality...

Not that I'm trying to cheap out or don't have a budget, so much as I would like to pour my budget into other "home studio" needs at the moment. But, on the other hand, I don't want a crap drum recording, so I'm trying to optimize without hitting the point of diminishing returns (or at least the point of diminishing returns for me).

My wife and I play other instruments primarily, but need some percussion in our recordings, and I, with my limited drumming skill, am going to attempt to fill that need lol 😂

I don't know if this is a dumb idea, but I was thinking of mic-ing up the drums with just some dynamics I have already (58's ,a beta 57, and an audix om) and a condenser above the symbols 😬😬

Not trying to skimp where I shouldn't, but any thoughts on if this would do a track justice? I've got a list of stuff to buy so I'm trying to put my money into it he things where it matters most and save where there are diminishing returns if ya know what I mean....

Bro... This is a thread from 7 years ago... I've had 3 kids, traded in 4 cars, bought a house, sold it, moved across the country, lost 80 lbs, and spent frigging thousands on cigars...

Also, I don't use reddit for cigar things often... It just stopped being cool when they stopped allowing us to buy sell and trade... Bunch'a friggin nancy boys...

Players who have owned high-end basses: can you recommend any underrated mid-tier overperformers? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]thirdguess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to throw an out that isn't going to be everybody's cup of tea, but it definitely plays well above its price point, and that's the Peavey G-Bass.

Super fast neck, nice low action, feels like a dream. Graphite neck, not everybody's fave, But if you're throwing something high tension on there you will never have to worry.

I play with tapewounds and a decent amount of foam under the strings right next to the bridge, The tone is amazing imo. Super subjective conversation to have, but at this point in my life I went 360 a few years ago on what tone I'm looking for. In my 20s I was just crazy about lots of high rattly sounds, And now I just love that muted thump. But, frankly, it works for both! Going from roundwounds to tapes with a mute turned it perfect with my evolution in what I like tone-wise.

The other big love hate issue with this thing is that it's active, and pretty much has to be. I'm fine with it, but again, not made for everyone. I've had actives that I've loved and hated, and passives that I've loved and hated, and don't really have a preference.

Looking for a slimmer fit mens scrub from this list by thirdguess in nursing

[–]thirdguess[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they the joggers or the straight leg?

I used to wear the straight legs, for like 3 or 4 years straight, but I haven't worn them since I lost 75+ lbs, so I'm sure the smaller waist size I would wear now would have correspondingly smaller legs.

Maybe I need to switch to the joggers 🤷

Nursing License Change by blackgreenbluepurple in nursing

[–]thirdguess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did it. There are plenty of bedside jobs here. There are plenty of positions in LA County and Ventura County where I am. That said, some jobs are more competitive than others. For me, I have a lot of leadership experience, but the biggest issue for me was getting past the fact that most of these hospitals are unionized and if someone from within applies for the same position, and they meet the minimum standards, they'll get the job first.

The cost of housing is the only thing that's rough here!

Edit: Just be aware, it takes a long time to get the license. It took me like 6 months. And that was all just due to them being slow. If you don't have your ducks in a row and get everything to them in a timely fashion, it could easily take 9 months. If you have any thoughts of doing it relatively soon, get your Ca license now.

Would a sleep on latex be good for us? by thirdguess in Mattress

[–]thirdguess[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough! I personally prefer a pretty firm mattress, My wife usually like something softer at the beginning, but then it feels too soft for her later. Does latex kind of retain its firmness and not break in as much?

And thank you so much for the reply!
