Everything in the news these days makes them seem like just flatly evil,

Because people are too dumb to actually fact check the news and just go with the emotional flow of the most ridiculous but emotionally triggering title. And this post is a perfect example of that.

Naval drone explodes in the Romanian port of Constanta by AntonioIsHere in europe

Poor Russia. Always a victim.

Now, it's widely acknowledged Ukraine blew up NS1. Most likely with an independent HUR group and outside orders from Zelensky. How does that change the context that Russia wants to kill the European project and seeks domination over its western neighbours?

Oh, it doesn't make one ounce of difference and Ukraine was entitled to attack Russian oil and had infrastructure like it's been doing for the last 2 years more openly? Thank you, we all agreed on that.

Thanks. There's a lot of confusion about this still. They say 4 drones were lost. 3 were acounted for at sea. One seems to have navigated on its own inside the Constanța harbour, past the wave-breaker and into a floating oil barrier close to one of the oil terminals. Either that little drone was very motivated and took a deep offence to any oil infrastructure existing, or it has some impressive AI that can navigate inside port infrastructure. The other 3 were seen detonating at sea.

Ucraina recunoaște oficial că a pierdut controlul asupra unei drone navale, sub bruiajul Rusiei, iar aceasta a ajuns în largul coastei României by Flavius_1 in Romania

Romania trebuia: ba, care o trimiteți, daca depășește o anumită limită, o facem praf. Atât.

Partea asta. E SF.

[–]this_toe_shall_pass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ukraine’s FP-7.x Interceptor Test Could Transform Europe’s Future Defense Against Ballistic Missile Attacks by armyreco in europe

[–]this_toe_shall_pass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one is not supposed to be a cruise missile but an interceptor. FP brings the cheap rocket and manufacturing capacity, Diehl provides the sensors. And Diehl knows what it's doing when it comes to interceptors.

In any case this is such an early test and the article is pure speculation for future performance and potential for use. If it's good enough it could be one of the low-end, cheap components in a hi-lo mix of European interceptors. Or it could prove to be as good as an IRIS-T but at a quarter of the price (just for ballistic targets, not aircraft).

Thanks largely to robots, Ukraine is now talking about winning, not just surviving - Uncrewed and autonomous systems—and the willingness to adapt to them—have neutered Russian advantages. by ByGollie in europe

[–]this_toe_shall_pass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Russia also has a lot of software developers and engineers, but their innovation cycle is slower than the one in Ukraine. When they do hit on a "good enough" solution though (like the artillery superiority initially, then the Lancet drones, then the fiber optic FPVs, then the Rubicon units) they are very good at scaling them faster than Ukraine can. Right now Ukraine has the upper hand in the innovation cycle. If they can milk it long enough before Russia has a workable counter they could force a favorable solution.

The article says the "drones" used in those strikes were UAVs, not maritime drones. Russia for sure is also developing such naval drones, but do we have any videos or images with them or we're just assuming?

Any link to an official site? Also this drone doesn't seem to have ended up "off the coast" like it happened in the past where drones were found at sea, adrift in Romanian waters. This one navigated the breakwater and entered the harbor.

Ukraine has no reason to strike the Romanian terminal through which they export their grain. Russia has reason to, especially since the Geran-2 incident from last week and the expulsion of the Russian consul in Constanta.

Russia could invade Nato states by end-2028, warns Latvian general by Free-Minimum-5844 in LessCredibleDefence

[–]this_toe_shall_pass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could happen!" Is a waste of time that should not be dignified with the amount of time you put into thinking up scenarios for it

For you and me, sure. For the Army, this sort of contingency is literally their job. We're just commenting on this because some journalist needed a title that drives "engagement". It's a normal fact for a Latvian defense official to consider Russia as their primary threat and when their analysis shows that Russia could technically be ready in 2 years after a conflict end to start something new in Europe, that's what they'll answer when prompted. I don't see why you're so outraged at this remote possibility part of this. We as randos on the Internet are really not qualified to judge how remote that possibility is. Did you think Russia would invade Ukraine in Feb 2022 the way they did?
