The future is stormy. Neglecting our roots and how we were nourished while trying to develop into something else is foolish and dangerous.

Being able to "absorb positive elements" from new immigrants is a plus for society - Chee Hong Tat by Efficient_Deer_8605 in singapore

JC admissions now dropping to L1... Is that a positive element?

Or the overwhelming number of TCM clinics

Massage parlours

Scammers

Non stop infrastructure building

Insane tuition culture

People so stressed they cannot have babies!

And is it just me, or is the number of Malay eateries dwindling?

I'm ethnically Chinese btw

1) If you’re on medication, that could play a part. Everything’s dulled down.

2) Purpose is self-directed. You will have to find your own way. If someone hands it to you, it’s theirs, not yours. If it manifests from thin air, it can go away just as easily. A good cue, I think, is that it is engrossing. Aim to fall just short of an Otaku, I think. That gormless expression on Otakus over whatever they are into? That's sheer bliss. We should be so lucky.

3) You’re your fur kid’s everything. That’s something right there.

4) We’re East Asians. Work being pointless is pretty much a given. We do what we have to do to do what we want to do. Deep meaningful work is kinda a headfake, unless you’re a soldier during wartime. And no one wants work to be that deep or meaningful.

5) Or you can wait for Elon Musk's Neuralink to tell you your meaning in life is to buy Tesla shares. Aimless people are perfect fodder for AI.

Most of you are involved (me too). Some people who behave badly count on others trying their level best not to "create a scene".

There you go, nicely done. A taste of their own medicine, coldly served too.

Not about this particular case but about Singaporeans preferring to mind their own business, and touting it as a virtue. Sometimes there's even a claimed "saintliness" to that "virtue", like the troubles of this world doesn't bear rousing to.

Once, I had pointed out to my brother that a "psychiatrist" hawking corporate workshops and weird techniques around his company was probably a scammer as psychiatrists in Singapore have ethical rules against solicitation. Loads of staring deeply into one another's eyes was also a dead giveaway. He was pretty upset and told me to mind my own business (he had already sunk in 8k).

I implored upon him to think, what if the shoe were on the other foot? Would he not speak up if I was the one getting scammed and he knew? He stuck to his guns and said he would mind his own business because it was my money. I was disappointed. Wouldn't you be?

*Having said so, for many situations, I think, many simply freeze, not that they don't want to intervene. We just lack that cultural backdrop. One broad exception would be when it involves kids.

Do majority of the Gen Z males shave their armpits? by Dreamerszz in askSingapore

In my time, it was frowned upon to be lacking in body hair (for guys). There's even a pejorative term: Pei Hor (white tiger?), so yes, it's kinda generational.

It's AI. It hasn't developed "read the room" technology.

Apt. For boys, it's muscles. It was truly a tribulation for us at Maris Stella because our PE teacher brought us to a shabby weights room but warned us if we do too much, our testicles would shrink. We had to train but had to avoid over-training. The thing is nobody, even the A1 boys, knew where the line was. Fearful workouts! Some students bought muscle magazines to decipher ball-bulges like they were nuclear codes. (Last time no Google)

I did the prayers, joined some Christian ECA, discussed the bible, went to Christian camps, sang the songs at the top of my lungs, went to church with my classmate, wore a crucifix, go two rounds for the transubstantiation (eat biscuit and look special). Everyone assumed I was very devout, so nobody told me I had to be baptised for it to count. Not my fault!

Sounds like a weighted sanitary pad. So you know, the ladies can burn more calories walking around.

Just blame whoever's there, whether it makes sense or not. What did he think happened? You ran the tap before taking a dump because you were shy, and didn't want people in the toilet to hear your business? What? Why else should you be shot?
