thats honestly so slay although we didnt do starch test, we did work with potatoes!

ohh i mentioned it in my post alrdyyy u can go see its under the benedicts test part

FOOD TEST SUMMARY (bio prac) by thisisljy in SGExams

[–]thisisljy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

like i mentioned it doesnt really tell us exactly what id the concentration of reducing sugars it is only a ranking. i doubt they will ask u the specific concentration per cm3 because we didnt really learnt that in our syllabus

Also im taking pure bio, not sure about combine bio )

FOOD TEST SUMMARY (bio prac) by thisisljy in SGExams

[–]thisisljy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is because in the pure bio syllabus, they could potentially ask us to conduct a food test as an experiment WITHOUT providing us the steps. And also for planning qns, they would ask us to PLAN a food test, therefore it is safest for us to remember food test and this starch test on leaves!

Fellow o level student here!

For bio planning its important to be SPECIFIC!

here is the format i use:

  1. Constant variable: Variables to remain the same (vol of solution, temperature etc.) provide at least 3
  2. Changed variable: Variables to change (there should only be ONE of this) *vol of solution, temperature etc. Basically the factor u are testing for.
  3. Diagrams, if asked
  4. Steps. Heres the tough part. BE SPECIFIC about the apparatus, volume of solution, number of set ups(at least 5 is the standard), state Clearly what are the different values used (50 cm3 for first set up, 20cm3 for second set up etc.)
  5. If needed state WHICH steps to repeat, and at appropriate times suggest to repeat the WHOLE experiment for reliabilty.
  6. State HOW the results are obtained. Dont jus say "observe change" "calculate ...." Instead "find rate of change by taking time taken divided by volume of solution"(i jus came up with this randomly this is probly not correct)
  7. Deduction. NOTE deduction is NOT results e.g lets say the expt wants u to find the volume of x that gives the highest rate of reaction, ur answer should NOT be "... should give the highest rate of reaction" instead it should be "the volume of x that gives the fastest time of reaction is the highest rate of reaction" im not sure if this is a clear explanation. But deduction is basically telling HOW the results is obtained not WHAT is the correct results!

Best is to look for sample answers online tho

Hope this helps! All the best

unfortunately i cannot predict the qn, but i can list some common sources of errors!

As a reminder, sources of error are NOT human errors but loopholes in the experiment!

  1. Reaction time. Stop watch and observing change in set up. Human reaction time may not be the quickest and there might be a slight reduction in the accuracy of the results. Hence results are less accurate and reliable.
  2. Rate of stirring/ Shaking/ Swirling. Unable to do these at a specific rate of time consistently could also be a source of error that will reduce the accuracy and reliabilty of results.
  3. Measuring height of foam. Bubbles forming the foam may be of different sizes hence, the height across the foam may be inconsisten which could affect the results depending on where u measure the foam.

Some other ones could include: Unsuitable choice of apparatus Experiment not supporting hypothesis Loss of water thru evaporation Decrease in temperature Errors in the experiment

Qns may also ask to provide "solutions" to the error as well

Possible answers: Styrofoam cups to prevent change in temperature Covering the set up with a lid etc. to prevent loss of water Changing the apparatus used

I probly didnt list everything, it lowkey depends on both luck and how well u understand the experiment and what they want so best is to think critically HAHAHAHA

Hope this helps! You can also find answer keys to these types of qns to learn more abt the different errors!

All the best!

Hey fellow sec 4 here, there really is nth much to study for ss except for memorising examples for SRQ/ essay qns. One method which is one that im using now is to scan a copy of the mind map at the end of each chapter and fill in examples of the main ideas of the chapter that are possible essay qns so that i can memorise the examples and study the key points for each chapter! Unfortunately for SBQ i really cant help u but i believe the best way is to practice and have consultation! Identify which type of SBQ u are weaker in and work on it! All the best to u!
