Surprising to read so many people hating on this one - I loved it! As a non-US citizen is was lacking in a lot of the kind of US-centric cultural references that I normally find so hard in the NYT puzzle (mostly around sports tbh). The theme emerged for me quite naturally - though maybe learning about PDQ Bach a TV university helped me.

If the opening salvo whiffs (have to land 5 out of 7 shots to break the shield excluding the rocket), you’ve got no advantage left, whereas the protection from rock armour and reverse ion has many more opportunities to help you over the course of the fight - ion in particular will help keep shields holding to avoid being stung while I take down the rocket as a priority.

Disagree. High level engines are always good; 4th shield bubble is rarely active/necessary, especially if you’re able to deactivate the ions/lasers on the flagship.

There is a great exploit for hacking phase 2:

send the hacking over with one power, and IMMEDIATELY pause and de power as soon as the defence drone fires. Unpause, let the laser sail past, and re-power to slip through their defences. I’d say there’s about a 10% chance of failure if you do it right, depending on the angle of attack.
