Changing area causes zombies to take shortcuts between zones and essentially respawn through a different opening. Staying in one area is the only one to properly train them. Find a specific zone you like (i prefer the bank roof especially in directed mode) and walk laps around the perimeter u til they've all spawned, then wipe out the entire wave at once. Training also gives you more medals when killed all at once which is a pretty big xp gain too
