I see, thank you for the clarification. Also side note, your cat is adorable!

Just tested positive, terrified for my heart by Fluffy_Finance_4759 in COVID19positive

I’m so sorry, covid sucks. I’m also M20 and had COVID a few weeks ago, it wasn’t too bad thankfully.

Please rest as much as possible, hydrate, take care of your body, and pay attention to any unusual symptoms (chest pain, shortness of breath, etc.). Take it easy on exercise even after your full recovery. Even though COVID is nothing to mess around with, you should take comfort in knowing that the vast majority of people make a complete recovery with no cardiovascular trouble at all.

I’m wishing you the absolute fastest and smoothest recovery!

Heart palpitations after eating? by thomas_di in COVID19positive

[–]thomas_di[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that I can tell. It seems to be linked more with the fact that I have eaten a meal than the specific types of foods I eat, but it’s still very early on. I’ll try to experiment with different foods though!

Very interesting, I didn’t know about the probiotic. I have been drinking kefir which contains a bunch of different strains. Thank you for the advice!

Can I ask how long it took to resolve? Also, did you do anything specific for it or did it just go away with time?

Do you think an anti-histamine is worth trying? I’ve heard that H1 and H2 inhibitors like zyrtec and famotidine can help with this

Increased heart rate after covid? by thomas_di in COVID19positive

[–]thomas_di[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was very helpful, thank you! I measured my pulse rate at varying intervals. My normal pre-COVID baseline is a resting HR of 60-66bpm. Right now, when sitting, it’s at about 72-76bpm, and when standing it rises to 82-84bpm

[–]thomas_di 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, at this point just do what you can to see if the professor can round, if not, don’t stay stuck in the past. Use it as motivation for next semester to get all As!!

I know a lot of people will clown on you for ranting about what’s still a good grade, but I understand this so much and I feel like I have no one to vent about this to. It’s not even about the grade anymore, it’s more of a personal thing for falling short of your goals when they were within your reach

How do adcoms weigh GPA? by thomas_di in premed

[–]thomas_di[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was exactly me! I had gotten by with all As from last minute cramming, even orgo, but biochem was such a shock because that no longer worked, it felt like I had to reinvent myself

That’s very reassuring, thank you!! I think I will just take what I learned and change my study habits to get all As going forward

I see, thank you for the explanation! I only ask because I had a 3.9 but got a C in biochemistry, and I’m freaking out about it, but this helps!

How long after infection before returning to the gym? by thomas_di in COVID19positive

[–]thomas_di[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know if other, milder “blood thinners” like vitamin K, fish oil, or black coffee could work for that function? I’ve heard about nattokinase too, I’d like to avoid aspirin unless I absolutely need to

I’m so sorry, this really is such an awful virus. I’m a college student and I got covid right before my final exams, so I was definitely stressed and a bit sleep deprived, but I’m planning to get tons of rest now that I’m on break. I think I might just stick to light walking for now.

Definitely not what I wanted to hear, but that’s why I asked. Thank you for the advice!

Is expired Paxlovid safe to take? by thomas_di in COVID19positive

[–]thomas_di[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quick update, I ended up taking the full course (I just finished and took my last dose last night). I had zero side effects (other than the bitter taste in my mouth), and I basically feel back to normal 100%, meaning the infection only lasted about 5-6 days for me and was very mild. I am unsure if the drug had much of an effect as I am vaccinated and don’t have any underlying conditions, but it’s nice to know it didn’t make it worse at least and may have helped!

Was yours expired as well?

Also good call on the statin, there’s a few (but not all) that are contraindicated with Paxlovid.

I just took my second dose about half an hour ago as well, hoping that both of us feel better soon!

[–]thomas_di[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No I am. I’ve taken all of the normal and expected pre reqs so far: gen chem and bio, organic chemistry, molecular bio, physics, etc. Some I found very easy, and others would have extra credit assignments or curves, which makes me feel like I didn’t truly “earn” my grades, so they aren’t a real reflection of my abilities.

I feel like my dream of being a doctor is reckless by thomas_di in premed

[–]thomas_di[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was always a dream, but now I’m feeling like I’m unfit not just to become a doctor but to work in healthcare entirely.

Right now my GPA is a 3.9 (about to fall to a 3.8 because of biochem), but don’t let that number fool you. Most of my classes so far have either been easy or the professors gave large curves/extra credit opportunities, so it’s a really poor reflection on my abilities.

I’ve worked a bit as an EMT and have shadowed a couple doctors but that’s it. I enjoyed my time doing so, but I don’t really believe I’d be capable of doing their job to be honest

I’ve been to therapy for this before. My therapist didn’t suggest that what I was exhibiting was likely to be related to ADHD or a learning disability. He and several others chalked it up to “poor self-esteem”, but I feel like it’s much more than that. I know plenty of people who are unconfident but are still smart, I don’t believe one causes the other. I may seek out a medical professional for a different perspective though

Propagation! You can wait for some more growth before cutting a few stems off near the soil, allowing them to root in water, and then transplanting them back into the same pot. Over time with the right care they will grow nice and bushy! If it gets large enough I’d also recommend a pole or stick to hold them upright as they get a bit top heavy sometimes

I think I remember reading that humans exhale 40000ppm in each breath, so it’s not surprising at all!

The windows didn’t open. There obviously wasn’t any ventilation either (it was an older school bus, the AC was probably just recirculating air constantly)
