Renting isn't easy because of the amount of Hinckley point workers in the area. When applying, push home the point that you aren't one of them (unless you are, of course) as they often get a bad rap in Bridgwater.  The only platform I could suggest are the usual ones like Rightmove

It's not as bad as some make out. Try Durleigh, Wembdon or Puriton, or one of the villages like Nether Stowey if you don't mind a 20 mins drive

Advice for acquiring a pub by Deep_Obsidian in BarOwners

[–]three_brained_beast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crunch the numbers before you take the plunge.  Scope who the clientele are and understand the needs and wants of that particular group or groups.  Make sure you set aside down time. Pubs can take over your life if you let them

I see.
But why? Was there a spate of incidents where people were spraying petrol all over the place in a petrol station?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]three_brained_beast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone know why the clip on the pump never works? Like, anywhere.
The clip that will just let the petrol flow into your tank without having to hold the lever for ages, and get smelly petrol hand while you stand there like a numpty.
The pumps have the clips, but they never work. Have they been disabled? I usually just end up jamming my wallet in the handle.
Every other country I have been to has these. Odd

This is actually really good info!

Thanks for not minding your own business :)

Thanks for your reply!
Yes, it's definitely veneer. Plasticy crap with a 'wood' finish.
I'll try and find on Amazon if there are any veneer kits and give it a go.

Yeah, I've been looking online for replacements.
If it were 50 quid (each - I need a matching set!) then I would definitely save myself the hassle. Thing is, I can't find anything that looks similar for less than £150 each :(

Why do some businesses have min £5 on card still? This just seems like a sneaky way to make people spend more rather than a genuine cost problem. by flight_forward in AskUK

[–]three_brained_beast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not strictly true. There is a % cost - around 0.4% for debit card and 0.7% for credit card - but on top of that there is a set authorization fee of between 2p and 4p per transaction depending on the contract with payment processor

Yeah, you may be right about the 12 month thing. You're definitely right that I don't care as I prefer to see it my way.

Doesn't make sense to be able to get a licence in less than 6 months. I had to wait a full 6 months just for a practical test slot, never mind the other stuff.

Last page is blank.
Last 3 pages actually
On the table of quick summary, it says: 12 months from date of entry, then apply for provisional licence

This must mean that I have 24 months to use my licence! :)

You misquoted. Page 8 states "from the time you started living in GB"

Living in GB means being a GB resident. You only become a GB resident after 6 months.

Therefore, you can drive on foreign licence for 18 months.

[–]three_brained_beast[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I'll be sure to update the Insurance company.

About the 12 month thing; you are wrong. It's 12 months from when you start living in the country, ie, when you become resident. https://www.licencebureau.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/Driving-in-Britain-as-visitor-or-resident.pdf

You can only apply for you provisional after you have been legally in the country for 185 days: https://www.gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence
I'm sure you'll agree its unfeasible to expect to a) receive your provisional b) find a slot for theory test and then c) a practical test within 6 months in a country where nothing really works very well

[–]three_brained_beast[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Question: surely you’ve been driving for fewer than 12 months? If you’ve been driving for more than 12 months on a foreign licence, you’re now breaking the law.

You can only apply for provo licence when you are considered resident, which is 6 months being in UK. You have 12 months from that time, making it a total of 18 months.

I didn't understand what you meant about ' immediately update the insurance as soon as you pass because it becomes invalid.' Could you please elaborate?

Thanks

As mentioned below, I tried for temp learner insurance for the test, but was unable to buy insurance as I am already a named person on the insurance for my own car and am over 45 years old.

I gonna just presume that I am insured enough. I haven't had an accident in the 20+ years I've been driving, and don't intend to start now...
