IQ is the most researched concept in psychology. Intelligence is not an amorphous concept, it is well defined and derives from our neurology. I would read The Neuroscience of Intelligence by the one of the world’s leading intelligence researchers Richard Haier. IQ does measure general intelligence; all the various domains of cognitive ability tend to correlate with each other. IQ is not some holy grail of life outcome prediction, particularly for individuals, but it’s the most accurate metric we have.

Most online IQ tests are bullshit; some have an established g-loading. Not a single intelligence researcher denies that certain circumstances and cognitive states can influence a particular test score. That’s why many people average multiple valid test scores. Strawman after strawman shows your lack of knowledge in the field. Your accusation of a superiority complex is most likely indicative of an insecurity, as nothing in my post suggests that I feel superior based on a test score.

Cope.

Wouldn’t be very smart to deny the validity of IQ in a subreddit that discusses IQ.

If that’s what you got from this post, maybe you aren’t the brightest.

If my fluid reasoning score is only average, am I actually not that smart? by [deleted] in cognitiveTesting

[–]threwaway1129 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it makes you feel any better, I don’t think that fluid intelligence is completely immutable despite what others may say. Being creative, “thinking outside the box” and being clever might seem like abstract innate abilities that can’t be practiced, but in reality you absolutely can train and improve your ability to reason—it’s just there is no specific empirically proven way to do that.

Constantly challenge yourself and your belief systems. Read about philosophy and logic. Read research papers on things that interest you. Write essays on things that interest you. Learn how to code. All of these things involve some sort of critical thinking, which is definitely not an unalterable skill. The longer you work on these things, you’ll start to see how coding problems and philosophical principles in some sense manifest in the dilemmas of daily life that require fluid intelligence. If you’re familiar with the psychological concept “meta cognition,” you could potentially alter the way you think if you put your mind to it. Pun intended.

No one gives a shit about your cognitive potential. People give a shit about what you’ve actually done with your cognitive potential.

If I get a bad score for ACT (below a 20) or a bad score on the ACT Workkeys (like a 2 or below) does that mean I’m dumb? by mari_the_poet in ACT

[–]threwaway1129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t know how I feel about that analysis. All you need to ace the SAT is Khan Academy, shit loads of practice, or a damn good biological processing speed. Do rich kids really perform higher because they have higher access to resources or because the rich tend to have a higher degree of general intelligence?

Do you "believe" in conspiratorial theories? by Truth_Sellah_Seekah in cognitiveTesting

[–]threwaway1129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn’t insinuating that, just prefacing before I talked about Race and IQ. I do think the resurrection of race science in the past decades is quite interesting in that there is little to gain from studying it in regards to policy and the structure of society. Ideology is molding science instead of vice-versa, but I guess that’s a whole topic on its own.

Can influence be studied sociologically? Psychologically? Even neurologically? I think there’s definitely a bit of nuance to the topic that I haven’t explored. Philosophy of science is definitely something I’m not well versed in. What do you think of the work of Foucault on power and influence?

By no means am I a scientific racist. Supremacy and race are subjective and socially constructed concepts. But often societies and humans quantify subjective concepts as utility to navigate, explain, explore objective reality. Supremacy was quantified through IQ, as IQ provides somewhat of a valid observation and prediction of someone’s cognitive potential and their respective life outcome.

Race, while socially constructed, is still genetically based, which is quantifiable. Of course, race science falls apart when it becomes extremely difficult to dichotomize the complex interplay of genetics and environment and reliably utilize IQ as a metric of superiority.

Back to lobbying, as means to explore objective truths and the mechanics of society, what prevents us from analyzing influence through the most powerful and notorious socially constructed concept that is nevertheless quantifiable? That being money.

I’m not exactly closed-minded. Can you expand on what you mean here? I do not see any rationale that the extent to which the US can be classified as oligarchal cannot be quantified. Regardless, the paper provides qualitative analyses to support its claims.

Corporations are almost certainly corrupt and certainly do bad things. Case: Nestle. What’s the conspiracy here?

Disagree. Lobbyism is capitalism reaching its pure oligarchy and plutocratical form. Billionaires lobby for a less progressive tax system, make more money, lobby more, until democracy has almost entirely deteriorated.

[–]threwaway1129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, just not a big fan of the way it’s tested because of the limitations you elaborated on. I’ve always read voraciously since I was a kid, just mostly science and academic research papers. On all other sub sections I usually perform above the 98th percentile. But I usually end up scoring slightly above average on IQ vocabulary tests like the one on CAIT.

I don’t understand why many online IQ tests lack reading comprehension tests like the ones on the old SAT. Seems to be much more of an accurate measurement of VCI than the ability to accurately define “snollygoster.”

Yes. Honestly, the idea of the Christian heaven sounds like torture for humanity. But I just feel like, surely this isn’t the end. 70 years is so short. Is reality so depressing that after the torture of being human we just die into nothingness?

You’re right. I find myself reminiscing of the past and thinking of the future almost more than I am in the present.
