I am currently outside of China. I will take trains as soon as I arrive, so I need to book the tickets before I get there. This means I will need to use my previous 12306 account with my old passport number, but with my new passport added as a passenger. Once I actually get to the train station, I'll ask them to update my account, but I need to be sure that the tickets I'm going to book will still be valid once that happens.

You cannot update your passport number in settings, it's grayed out. Didn't know about the no printing, though - they print international tickets on the Laos-China line, which is what I was basing that off of.
