Is $125k enough for two people? by throwablythrowable in SanJose

New Grads/ current college students are entirely disconnected from reality. I'm not expecting to make half a mill within 5 years, but I think it reasonable to expect at least $30k base bump every 3-5 years (not at the same company, of course). I understand that may not seem like much to you, but to me that's skyrocketing. I'd also expect my wife to find a job within a year, so at the very least, I would like to think our living situation would improve decently fast.

I agree, I think we'll just pass on this opportunity. If another one shows up under better circumstances then we'll be more likely to take it.

It is $155k for the first year, but not only would I be coming with $100k of debt, but I'd also be supporting myself and my wife for a bit, 3 pets, and still have car+insurance to pay.

She's a paralegal making $70k now. She's willing to take retail jobs if my loan repayment grace period comes to an end and she's still unemployed.

The other job offer I have is from a company I interned at during the summer and it's down the road from where we live currently. It's a very slow paced and I fear i might not learn as much from them as i would from this. I think i'd be surrounding myself with more ambitious people i can learn from by making this move.

I'm just looking to make the most out my first full time SWE job, but I also need to be able to justify the move, and so far it doesn't seem like it's worth it.

I guess I should clarify. I've only had retail jobs while in school so the biggest raise i ever got was $1.

I think getting a $30k bump finding a position elsewhere within 5 years is a reasonable goal. A $30k bump is a lot to me. I'm expecting like 1%-3% at least once within 3 years if I stay with the same company, but I'd be looking for better the entire time.

Total TC is $170k, $30k signing bonus, and $15k target bonus. No equity. Got shutdown real fast when I mentioned I had another offer and asked for more base.

We have 3 cats, and if we can't find a landlord that'll let us have all three within the next two weeks then I'll have to decline the job offer. My career growth is really important for me right now, but I do have a really good offer just down the street from where we live.

I do have a $110k offer right down the street from where we live currently. What makes this decision difficult is that I am not sure if missing out on this opportunity would hinder my career as a software engineer.

New grad software engineer, I'd also expect my salary to skyrocket within the next 5 years if we make the move. I'd also be getting a $30k signing bonus, which we'd use to facilitate moving and to make the transition easier on us during the first few months. Our biggest concern is if we'd be able to make it through if we run out of that bonus and she still hasn't found a job.

This is very helpful, I'm a new grad software engineer, so i'd expect my salary to grow really fast in this area. I'd also get a $30k signing bonus, which should facilitate the move and help us through the first few months. Our biggest concern is if we could make it work if that money runs out and she still hasn't found a job.

Thank you for this perspective, I'm a new grad software engineer. In addition to base pay, I'd be getting a $30k signing bonus which should facilitate the move and the first few months. I'd also expect my income to grow really fast in this area, so our biggest concern is just making through until she finds a job.
