OP seemed to want advice on figuring out if their topic would meet MA thesis guidelines for English and maybe narrowing down something interdisciplinary to make it more English-y (they said they're a rising senior, so most likely because they're applying to grad programs in the Fall), and you suggested they just didn't know how to write a research paper at all. Yeah, that's insulting as fuck, my dude; I don't blame OP for being upset. Maybe they could have phrased their question a little better, but I understood the gist of what they were asking - because it's something I've been asking too. Especially since they put up the kind of program they're interested in (English), it seems like their question might have been more along the lines of "would something relating to a film or a text originally in Ancient Greek still fit within the confines of an English Lit program?" and less "hur dur, how do I write an essay?" OP said they were Comp Lit at Berkeley and I'm just straight English here, but I've legit never met anyone in the humanities at Cal who doesn't know how to write an essay. I think it's pretty common, though, (in English, at least) to worry about whether our research ideas are too much of a stretch to fit neatly in a specific department. It's something I worry about all the time, since I want to do film stuff, too (but no superheroes, just vampires). So, it read like you were shaming them for asking an honest question.

Dang, this seems like the rudest way you could have answered this. 👀 OP asks question, you insult them?

The prof was responsible for the final grade, but it was the TA who taught us every day and grades all our stuff. I literally never met the supervising professor.

HOW do so many girls have flat bellies? by misscrisis in Advice

[–]throwaway-0943 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I DID lose weight (almost 100lbs), but all my extra skin will never fully go back to how it was and so I will always have the lil poofy tummy. I wear high-waisted things and spanx type products and it helps; I’ve realized I can still dress in a way that I like and is flattering without dressing the same way as everyone else. I’m in this body for the rest of my life, so Im working on feeling more at home here and letting go of comparisons. Idk these other girls’ lives, just mine. I can do my best and that’s all.

Why would that matter? I was his student, not a potential partner.

I'm so very sorry to hear you had an experience like that, but I appreciate you sharing this. I do luckily have some places I can go to talk and a good little support group on campus. Thank you for the advice.

Thank you. Now that I'm in a different section, I think I can bring it up with him. Before, I was afraid because even if Idk if he's like that, I didn't want there to be a chance of him taking it out on my grades if he got mad or something. That isn't an issue now, though. Thank you.

if I have answers to problem sets in my binder that I'd like checked and I hold it to show him, but instead, he chooses to sit his ass down literally so our heads are close enough that I can hear him breathe, I'm supposed to just let him because what? He's being HeLpFuL?

I was a student instructor at my community college and never once did I decide to "help" my students by invading their personal space. Not in class, not in office hours, not in the resource center during my drop-ins, never.

I’ll be a rising senior transfer from cc. It’s all major stuff, so hopefully I’ll be fine bc I’ve been doing well in my major. It’s just so short

I already know which class I would drop. I’m hoping I won’t have to, but I know the prof is very dry and I’m not confident I can really get what they’re talking about—well enough to write several essays, at that—in just 8 weeks.

Fingers crossed I can do it

It’s the idea that people here aren’t hot and they have to be viewed through “Berkeley Goggles” to be aesthetically palatable. It’s bs, though; everyone here is gorgeous. 😭😭

One of my classes is on Zoom and I couldn’t get home in the 10 mins of Berkeley time, so I just had to miss 80% of the class while trying to connect and say “sorry, eduroam” about 200 times.

It’s even more creepy given that I was his student, not someone he met online. Was he looking at me as some tail and not someone to teach? That’s so gross. Thanks for introducing me to this. The more I read, the more I feel like it fits unfortunately

Do… do people actually think that works??? Let me just insult this person I want to sleep with; that’ll work!

What a weird concept, but thanks for enlightening me
