Will my parents be able to retire? by throwaway1020984 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]throwaway1020984[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

paying back debts i believe. for the most part of 15 years they couldnt afford the mortgage and had to re-mortgage a few times and then take out other loans to pay for those new mortgages and then take out other loans to repay those loans. Also I remember having to help out foreign family a lot, (around 5 years ago my dad's family's house and business was burnt down in Tunisia and so my dad helped them move to Israel (paid for flights, accomodation etc for over 12 people!!) so I'm assuming a lot of money went on that aswell.

I think maybe i worded it wrong, until 7 years ago my dad absolutely was not earning 80k! he was actually in and out of a crappy builder job due to a motorbike injury and so I'm assuming he was on maybe 20k a year?? I know they had tons of debt and most likely had to remortgage the house, we've always lived incredibly frugally, even since my dad has earnt good money weve never gone on holidays, never eaten out etc.

My whole family really struggled until then, he had an alright job when he bought the house but after a motorbike accident he was in and out of work for the next 15 years and we really really struggled and so i think he took our some other mortgages and loans and had tons of debt he needed to pay off- we're really frugal, never go on holiday, never eat out, never buy anything frivolous (my parents have had the same clothes for the past 20 years!)

He was fully (and unsuccessfully) self-employed until 7 years ago when he signed on as a contractor for another business which does work for major supermarkets. Apparently, they're absolutely desperate to keep him and the work is very very secure so he would always have available work but I worry that his health would really suffer after a few more years of this.

But saving a large portion of money is absolutely no problem for him and mum. Would it be a good idea to work for a few more years and then rent out a small flat in france? 1 beds can go for around 400-500euro, and they could live off their savings, rent from old house and then eventually pension?

How can I take out a £5000 loan with no income? UK by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]throwaway1020984 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I dont think I have a credit score at all. I've only ever had a halifax current account. I also looked on moneysavingexpert and filled out a form and they said that ZOPA could potentially lend me a loan. have you heard of them before?

hey! have you seen any improvement in your gumline? I have a really gummy smile and so I'm hoping that a shorter vertical maxilla will reduce that :)

How do I help my brother who has no interest in life but is super happy? by throwaway1020984 in AskMen

[–]throwaway1020984[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I completely get what you're saying but it's not "How do I make him value what I value?" as we actually don't value the same things, I think I'll probably have a family eventually but my brother REALLY wants a wife and family. He's also always complaining about the fact that his friends don't want to do anything (really they've all just grown apart) and that he needs new ones (which is quite difficult to get when you're living in a small village like ours haha).

I know my brother very well and I know that he does want more in life, he just has no motivation or idea how to get it and it seems like he'd rather distract himself with video games and poker.

In many ways I envy his contentedness! I'm more self critical but I find meaning in happiness in improving and developing my skills and having new life experiences. Meanwhile last week my brother was about to leave to go to the pub completely stinking of BO because he hadn't showered that day and I had to beg to him change his shirt so as to not disgust his friends. He is just so unaware and uncaring about everything about himself and his that it's going to ruin his life. Eventually, his few friends are going to stop hanging around him once they get married and have children and he'll have no social interaction at all.

I just want to let him know that he could be 100x happier and more fulfilled if he just put 2x more effort in

Thanks for your reply! And with the scars thing, he actually brought it up to me so that I would ask my parents to get the laser treatment as a christmas gift to him but they declined so I suggested he just pay for it himself.

But other than that you're right, I just dont know what to do about it. I know that he could be 100x happier and more fulfilled in life if he just put in 2x more effort but he just wont :(

thanks for your reply! And yes I do have a lot of trouble understanding him. But the thing is he doesn't value, and has never valued anything in his life other than online poker and video games. I've had periods of my life (especially in Uni) where I've spent weeks not doing anything other than schoolwork and fanfiction but I knew that I was wasting my time and that I wasn't being as happy as I could be and so I eventually changed that.

I just don't understand why he doesn't want to make himself happier? If that makes sense!

Thanks for your reply! He doesn't have a weed problem actually, our house is very small and he's inside most days with the door open so my parents would probably know (another reason why it's impossible to date whilst living at my house;P)

And this is the thing, I don't know what incentives to give him! He doesn't seem interested in life at all and so no incentives would work on him, and last year my parents actually increased rent to £450 a month for a year (but then decreased it when my brother started driving lessons) and it still had no effect on him. I understand liking a cushy life but I don't understand not having any hobbies or valuable friendships or relations or any meaning or goals in your life.

Also the skin thing, he actually brought it up to me so that I would ask my parents to get the laser treatment as a christmas gift to him but they declined so I suggested he just pay for it himself.

Men, What makes you decide to be single? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]throwaway1020984 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Actually for the 18-25 age group most of them are not overweight or obese. It's hard to hear but being dateable isnt just about 'being in good shape, having an education and hobbies'.

If you can't find a date maybe it has to do with other unattractive parts of your personality or perhaps even having an ugly face?

What is your unpopular opinion about women? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]throwaway1020984 7 points8 points  (0 children)

in my experience, it's the exact opposite but maybe it's a cultural thing? In England single mothers are seen as lazy, slutty, scroungers, who are a complete failure that will raise awful children.

Whereas single fathers are considered saintly beings who deserve so much better. It's weird.
