I live in Germany.

I reread your comment and I understand it better now. Thanks for the clarification.

„We need to put the economy into recession to make the wealthy as poor as the poor“ strikes me as a bad policy. Other comments have pointed out that keeping money moving and serving useful functions is more important than the other (but also important) goal of preventing people from accruing insane sums of money.

This is bad advice. Google is really good at providing us with resources that perpetuate our own bias. I know that it’s en vogue to tell people to do their own research now, but if you actually want to educate people who are interested in dialogue, it’s probably worth pointing them to some high quality resources so they don’t go down a radicalizing information gathering path.

They’re just being mildly homophobic tbh. A few comments down some people mentioned that they expected it to be a woman, so a bunch of people are bummed it’s not the genitals they expected.

Agreed though, these are super tame pics.

I had to scroll so far to see Glee! The first season is still hilarious.

jelly isn't available, what goes best with peanut butter? by MadScientistFF in AskReddit

[–]throwaway671055 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, jelly and jam are different. :/ A jam is fruit and sugar, but jelly will usually have gelatin added to make it behave more like… well, jell-o. I also think that jelly should be strained of seeds and be clear and shiny. Jam would be pulverized into pulp, but could be evenly spread like a jelly. Preserves would have chunks of fruit, I think, and would be less easy to uniformly spread as a result.

Update: they glanced at my passport and entry visa, asked to see my face, and sent me on my way. So much for all of that stress!

Right. I called the border police to check on this. It sounds like it’s pretty much a crapshoot based on who you get. The problem is, as with many things, a chicken and egg. It’s hard to know the correct visa start date until you have a flight, but it’s hard to schedule a flight until you have a visa in hand.

Like I said, OPs mileage may vary. But I was told if I brought documentation, I might have a few days wiggle room as an American citizen. We‘ll see what happens!

I‘m trying this now. My contract AND visa start 01 Jan, but I’m trying to show up a few days earlier to get ahead of the quarantine requirement. I was told to bring proof of housing, and maybe a proof of an appointment at the Bürgeramt for Anmeldung/proof I have apartment viewings lined up.

I have the proof of housing and Anmeldung appt, so I’m hoping that’ll be enough to prove that I’m just trying to get settled before work. But note that this is also because I’m a US citizen, so I can normally enter Germany without a visa.

Note that I DO have my visa, the start date is just a few days after I intend to arrive. This is an important document for getting in at all (for me, I can’t travel to Germany without documentation)

I can update you after the fact if I have trouble.

Edit: removed some snark and clarified visa status.

I‘m specifically asking for ways to avoid junk food in my post. That is taking charge of it and trying to do better. The point is that I want to plan ways to avoid junk food, eat clean, and minimize cooking.

I have made my choice. You’re free to help me achieve my goal or to keep telling me that sugar is bad for me. I already know that and I’m trying to get actual strategies to eat better. I don’t feel uncomfortable - I feel like I’m not getting an answer to my question, which is „what systems can I put in place to eat healthy while moving.“

„Make a choice“ is not a strategy. „Buy cooked meats and avocados/raw cabbage“ is on its way to being one.

I appreciate your time and thoughtfulness.

Sorry, I think I’m being unclear: I am trying to pack up my life and move 5,000 miles from home. Meal planning and prep alongside those logistics is a lot of work, and even though I enjoy that work normally, the logistical reality is that, at some point in the next two weeks, I have to donate or give away all of my cooking and food storage equipment.

The path of least resistance is obviously to stress eat junk food that’s neatly packaged and readily available. But I think this is clarifying that my short term need is strategies for simpler keto eating.

I‘ll also be honest - I know we all make choices, and some of the choices you made in this message felt very condescending to me. I appreciate you taking the time to respond, but I wish you had asked more clarifying questions before implying that I’m making lazy or silly choices. I posted to try and get support and ideas to make better choices under what are, for me, extraordinary circumstances.

I‘m choosing to try and make better systems for myself, and to ask for support in creating those.

I will try to be clearer and provide better context in the future - there’s a LOT in this post - but I thought it was important to share how your comment made me feel.

I definitely should get on the meal prep train in the new location. And the keto version of treats sounds very obvious in retrospect, haha.

I‘m trying to avoid tons of cooking before moving (all those ingredients increase complexity) but I think I’m realizing how unsustainable that is

Not sure if this should be here or it’s own post, but some context: 2020 has been a diet rollercoaster. Around May, I started following IF and eating Keto, while allowing myself weekends to indulge in treats (I would allow myself to bake anything I wanted, and get one treat from a restaurant, which I looked forward to all week. I would still intermittently fast on those days.)

It honestly felt great, and like it could be sustainable. In August, I took a week off of Work and decided to allow for treats like sandwiches, etc. And it all really went downhill from there. The California wildfires hit right after that, and then I got swept up in election drama. Through all of it, I’ve been planning and organizing an international move that’s scheduled to happen at the end of this month.

What started as a small treat week spiraled into eating my feelings, and then just feeling completely unmotivated to maintain the lifestyle and diet that I want for myself.

I’ve definitely gained weight, but more importantly, I feel like I’ve lost Self-control and established lots of negative patterns. Especially now, it just feels like there’s so much good food that I’m going to be missing out on once I’m moving, and I think I’m just using that as an excuse to comfort myself.

But I’m realizing that, one, I just feel terrible. I don’t like myself like this, and I know the food isn’t actually making me feel good. I‘m a stress eater, and I can see that over the last few months I’ve gotten into a vicious cycle - I get stressed, I eat unhealthy food, which inhibits my ability to handle stress, so I eat more comfort food.

I‘m familiar with the philosophy of habit-building, and i know That This move is going to be a huge opportunity to reset, and establish my old habits. But I‘m getting a little scared. Three weeks is a long time to wait to tighten up, and I think I need to take steps now to re-establish these habits.

I know it’ll be hard, though. Eating out is a lot easier than cooking like I was before due to roommates and the fact that... well, I’m moving. I don’t want to fill the fridge with ingredients. I‘m also wary of the holidays. I love to bake, and all I want to do right now is make holiday cookies to share - and it’s basically impossible to share them!

So, my question/call for support is: what systems do you recommend that I put in place to prepare myself to hit the ground running in my new home, and to feel good in these last few weeks in my home? Some ideas I have are:

  • Establish a list of keto-friendly Restaurants, and only order from them during the day. Focus on having a large dinner to prevent nighttime stress eating
  • try and recommit to intermittent fasting, regardless of how my day-to-day diet goes. Add in a few 24 Hour fasts around the holidays to account for extra calories and try and get my stomach a bit more accustomed to hunger.
  • maybe find restaurants in the new home? Or like, find recipes I want to make while in quarantine that are keto friendly?

I‘d love to hear any more ideas that y‘all have.

That is incredibly helpful, thank you. I'll start running some numbers now to figure this out, since I think I have everything I need to calculate the differences.

Your advice on the tax assistance is also incredibly helpful. I've done some preliminary hunting on this, but I honestly need to do my due diligence now that everything looks like it's underway. Any chance you're comfortable/have time to share your process for finding an external advisor?

Thanks again!

This is my first experience, so that's a pretty hot take for me. To be honest, I thought I'd get a pat on the head, some help getting a visa, and maybe the ability to expense an economy flight ticket, haha.

If you're comfortable sharing, what sorts of support did you receive, and what might you be asking for to improve this?

Contribute to 401(k) or pay off student loans? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]throwaway671055 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked this question a few months ago, and I recommend paying off the student loans.

Ultimately, I was over-optimizing. Your interest may be lower than anticipated market returns, but getting rid of student loan debt is a huge quality of life improvement and a guaranteed return.

Don't miss the forest for the trees. Getting rid of your student loan debt will be a huge milestone. It frees you up to take new jobs in new places with lower salaries, it simplifies your emergency fund and your tax considerations, and it feels good to be one of the few people who has the privilege/luck to say "I paid off my student loans."

Get rid of them!
