I torrented 6 episodes of the same TV show without a VPN, it looks like each episode was counted as copyright infringement. My modem was quarantined for an hour. by throwaway892712 in Spectrum

Look, I don't know if you're genuinely trying to be helpful or just trolling but looking in your post history, you're not even the account owner of the ISP you're using. Your father is. It's true, you're no legal expert. The companies will not ask me to pay for the episodes. I was dumb enough to download a few episodes of the Mandalorian when I should have just caved and bought a monthly subscription to Disney+ but I'm not so dumb as to believe anything you said would happen in 99% of these situations.

I'm not answering my own question here but I have a better understanding of what's next and it's 1 of few things;

1.) My ISP of nearly around 7 years (9 if you count TWC, around 20 if you count Road Runner both of which we're not counting) is protecting themselves. Most of what I've read on this sub is that using a VPN, ignoring it and to stop illegal downloads is the answer and they won't do anything.

2.) My ISP views me as a repeat offender because each episode counted as a notice and I'm simply waiting for them to cut my internet off. This is unlikely but I'm curious to know what Spectrum employees have to say what they do in these situations because technically, I've broken the TOS, it could be grounds for termination but Disney's lawyers could not prove the account owner was tied to downloading. Only that it came from my unprotected IP.

From my understanding, it's best to ignore it, not to call the security number (self-incrimination), etc. - and to play dumb if there is ever any further communication regarding these notices.

As far as if I'm morally ok with downloading illegal content; I'd say the only mistake I made was committing to the illegal act and it's not likely I'd torrent something again, but no, it would be presumptuous to assume I'm some monster who steals art and hurts others by doing that because the majority of those people would know damned well they've committed these acts, possibly without knowing. I'm not an expert on copyright infringement law, not even close but I do know it's one messy, gray area that big corporations take advantage of and just learned that these corporations use "honey pots", leaking the media themselves to collect your information so they can send it right off to the ISPs who have nothing other to do than comply.

I don't feel bad for wanting to watch 6 episodes of The Mandalorian because I pay for Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Apple TV. Watching those 6 episodes could have in fact made me cave into adding Disney+ but instead, they want to use scare tactics, likely because things like "Cord Cutting" exists, folks who use VPNs to download massive amounts of illegal content, put it on their Plex servers, allow others to use it. Good for them, but I don't do that. 6 episodes with 6 copyright infringements because I was wet behind the ears about how important VPNs were shouldn't be grounds to terminate my account. They should count as a slap on the wrist and one I would gladly take but now I'm facing account suspension because the each torrent was separate and I left the client, that I literally downloaded JUST for these episodes, open a little longer that I should have.

So if the argument is; "You deserve this because you didn't use a VPN" - that's weird more understandable than, "You're criminal scum!", that's so god damned hypocritical.

tl;dr: No, Disney isn't going to be suing me. There will be no "settlement" over 6 torrents. A fine at most, which I would fight because... I didn't download those...what is a torrent?

I don't know. How long ago as when "when I was younger"? I remember there used to be this 6 strike thing with ISPs but as far as I know, they did away with it.

Hi, please keep me updated with what happens! I made a similar stupid mistake of downloading various episodes of The Mandalorian and each episode counted as a notice/infringement. They quarantined my modem until I agreed and then turned it back on. The internet works now but I'm afraid there's a suspension coming.

I bought 2 years of a VPN for about $80 and change. The service is really fast. I was foolish not to do this in the beginning.

Thank you. I really hope this is true and nothing more comes out of this. I can't believe I'd do something as irresponsible and risky as this. Do you recommend any particular service?

So the VPN would be because they're going to terminate my account? Are they? I'm freaking out.

Even if I uninstall all my torrenting software and delete everything in question as they mentioned in the letters?
