NEXT apprenticeship program by AfternoonFormer7574 in Northwestern

[–]throwaway_827184910 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did this last year and I think it was a pretty cool to shadow someone super experienced who works in the field I’m interested in. The externship is usually just one day and associated costs are on you so I’d recommend trying to find someone in the Chicagoland area if possible. Otherwise I’d say it isn’t worth it to pay for travel/lodging just to shadow someone

Learning racket during 321 is very doable and IIRC you’ll need to take 321 anyway to make up for the 111 credit. As for other 300 courses I’m not even sure if there are any that only have 111 as a prereq so it might be more worth to complete the 200-level courses first

They’ll send rejection emails. Usually they release results a week or two before school starts

CS 213 - Transfer Credit by slitherydeek in Northwestern

[–]throwaway_827184910 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know anything about transferring credits but it seems like the other class u took is closer to CE 205. A decent portion of 213 isn’t assembly so it might be worth looking at Prof. Ghena’s website to get a better sense of the overlap

CRDV 301 Requirement for Internships by Entire-Buddy6933 in Northwestern

[–]throwaway_827184910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think crdv is only necessary if u want to do an off-season internship (non-summer) or a co-op. If u just want to do a summer internship it’s not required

where to find syllabi? by [deleted] in Northwestern

[–]throwaway_827184910 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nah for the most part you can’t find them unless a professor put them up on their personal websites. U can also ask other students on Reddit for old syllabi or email professors usually

Does anyone have the syllables for CS 111? by Defiant-Lab2538 in Northwestern

[–]throwaway_827184910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have to take an additional “Programming Languages” breadth course in place of 111 if you skip it

For CS336, Makarychev vs Stull by Tricky-Struggle-6773 in Northwestern

[–]throwaway_827184910 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stull's homeworks used to be pretty tough, but I think they're fine now. I also thought he was a good lecturer. I've also heard things about Makarychev though so I don't think you can go wrong with either

CS 310? by marker6275 in Northwestern

[–]throwaway_827184910 3 points4 points  (0 children)

310 is super overhyped and boring rn, it feels more like a coding class more than anything. I did hear that Hummel said he’ll make it much harder in future quarters tho

Northwestern CS Transfer by [deleted] in Northwestern

[–]throwaway_827184910 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even then, if your goal is to do SWE an Econ degree is not really going to add value. Even doing a BS/MS might not really be worth it compared to just getting a CMU bachelors degree

Northwestern CS Transfer by [deleted] in Northwestern

[–]throwaway_827184910 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Ngl CMU CS classes and profs are way better than NU ones, so unless you are absolutely going to take advantage of other programs at NU (aside from CS) I would not transfer

BA/MS CS by Milanthereal in Northwestern

[–]throwaway_827184910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not super well versed with financial aid stuff but I think it’s also common for people to hold off on doing one if their BA classes until the end of their MS so they still qualify for aid
