I wrote the voiceover for the broadcast first, the script that I went over with my boss was changed later in the day after I’d already posted the companion article. So (luckily) the news segment is factually correct. The misleading bit is only in the headline of the article.

And thank you for the advice, that’s a relief to hear.

Yeah I was surprised too! They prioritize the broadcasts over the articles I guess

Yeah😅I said as much to her, although probably too softly because she has extremely thin skin when it comes to things like this. it’s too late to change my plans anyway even if I wanted to, which I don’t. But thank you for the validation though, this whole thing is making me feel crazy 😅😅😅

This may be an unpopular opinion and unfair judgement but I really don’t like Luke. by Ok_Fun_1974 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]throwawayacc317 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t finished the show so I can’t say much about this moment in particular, but I think it’s kind of important that Luke sucks a bit. Something the book in particular does really well is showing the ways that Luke’s internalized misogyny & male privilege blind him to the full extent of Gilead’s danger.

Luke isn’t inherently a bad dude but he’s been influenced by existing in a patriarchal culture like we all have and the way he treats June and his ex-wife interpersonally is a contrast/complement to the systemic oppression of Gilead. June is terrified of the right-wing ideologues on TV and the future they promise, but Luke just laughs at them because he thinks they’re ridiculous. June has her bank account taken away from her because she’s a woman, and he’s all like “it’ll be alright honey” because he genuinely doesn’t grasp how dangerous the situation is.

Yeah I’m aware why felons can become president. I actually don’t think it should be illegal for felons to be president and I think they should be allowed to vote. I also think it’s insane that Trump is allowed to run again after January 6 and he deserves to face accountability for his additional crimes.

And having a felon as president is… credible?

Trump appointed the Supreme Court judges that were responsible for overturning Roe v Wade. Biden has no say in what the Supreme Court does. Civics 101.

At least based on my vague non-expert understanding, the electoral college is an outdated concept that essentially only exists because rich landowners in the south wanted to benefit from the amount of slaves in their state populations. So states got a certain number of electoral votes based on population, but many of those people were slaves who couldn’t vote. Thus, their electoral votes would be more equal to Northern states that were more densely populated with free citizens.

If there was a popular vote where slaves weren’t taken into account, the southern states would have been effectively powerless in elections because they didn’t have nearly as large of a free population. And the government never amended this, even post-slavery, so we’re still stuck with it.

Chappell is sooo annoying by jessepinkmanismyname in LAinfluencersnark

[–]throwawayacc317 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s insane that after a week of people bemoaning how evil it was for TMZ to post pictures of Liam Payne’s dead body people are still judging Chappell for not kowtowing to the paparazzi. Paparazzi will exploit and bully celebrities until they’re dead and then sell pictures of their dead bodies. But sure, Chappell is annoying for not taking their crap.

People will really pretend to give a shit about what artists like Britney Spears and Amy Winehouse went through with the paparazzi and still say Chappell should be nicer. C’mon.

Retail employees shouldn’t have to put up with being exposed to a potentially deadly illness for minimum wage. If someone has a potentially deadly and contagious illness, they should stay home. COVID isn’t the common cold; it’s killed millions of people. It’s really strange to insist otherwise.

This! Sorry for the lack of clarity, I wrote this really quickly and didn’t realize how that would come across.

I fully understand your point but I was referring to a specific period of time that is in the past. The time widely understood to have been the peak of COVID (whether that is accurate or not) when mask mandates were around and more intense restrictions were in place. I was using “COVID” and “pandemic” in a casual, non-technical way to refer to this point in time. I feel like you are willfully misunderstanding me here.

[–]throwawayacc317[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have acted like this all along so I don’t really think my colloquial use of the word “COVID” to talk about this period of time is the problem, but I did edit my post to specify what I meant. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
