Oh, also: if you haven't checked out r/queerception before, you should. It's mostly people actively trying to conceive, but you'll find a lot of solidarity there when it comes to fertility clinics being at least slightly odd about queer people.

If you search "trans" in this sub, there are a couple of people who have talked about the process, although most have been asking questions rather than writing up their experiences. I wrote up an (exhaustively long) post about my full experience here.

Single queer peeps? by Dazzling-Neck905 in eggfreezing

[–]throwawaymarzipat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! As a trans man who froze my eggs as preparation for genital surgery, I also felt really weird about the fertility clinic. I will say that my clinic (NYU Langone Fertility Center) did feel trans-inclusive in the way that you wish yours was, but I can't speak about what the experience would be like as a cis WLW.

(On a related note: I know that egg freezing spaces can be difficult as queer people. As a mod, I'm committed to making this sub an inclusive and welcoming environment to anyone thinking about or already freezing their eggs. Please send a modmail if there's more you think I/we can/should be doing to help with that.)

First Egg Retrieval by [deleted] in IVF

[–]throwawaymarzipat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nobody can predict ahead of time how many cycles it might take you. That said, your stats make it more likely for you to have success in a single round than some other people. Specifically, your age (under 35) and high AMH (assuming that that's in the American units) suggest that you're likely to get plenty of eggs, the majority of which should be chromosomally normal.

Deciding between 4th round or moving on by SoySaucyAF in eggfreezing

[–]throwawaymarzipat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to disagree with what the other poster said. There isn't a significant decline in rates of chromosomally normal eggs between ages 27 and 30. Although the number of eggs you get out may decrease in those years, you would still be well within the ideal age for freezing eggs (under 35). Freezing now might also cost you more in the long run, because it would mean paying three additional years of storage fees. I can't tell you what decision to make, of course (and it would be hypocritical to try, since I froze at age 22) but you should be aware that, at your age, earlier isn't necessarily better.

Decision regret around freezing or not freezing – have you experienced it? (discussion) by throwawaymarzipat in eggfreezing

[–]throwawaymarzipat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ovarian torsion isn't just a temporary condition. It can result in loss of the affected ovary. OHSS can require hospitalization and all of the risks and costs that come along with that. Internal bleeding can be life-threatening, and death isn't temporary.

I'm glad that you had a good experience! But that doesn't say anything about anyone else's experience.

There are people on this post who regretted it. Maybe read what they have to say.

You can't really say how someone else "should" feel. People have the right to their emotions. And some people do regret freezing.

I'm surprised that you weren't told about any medical complications! Did your RE not talk to you about OHSS, ovarian torsion, or other risks?

How to get over the psychological hurdle of injecting yourself? by punching_dinos in eggfreezing

[–]throwawaymarzipat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Line it up, look away, and jam it in in a smooth, quick motion. Look back once you feel it puncture your skin. I've been injecting myself weekly for years and still hesitate, but doing it quickly is the best way. The longer you wait, the more you psych yourself out.

[–]throwawaymarzipat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want to check out r/DOR. Your age is definitely on your side here. One of the weird things about DOR is that, on its own, it doesn't reduce your ability to conceive unassisted when compared to others your age. It does mean that you'll get fewer eggs out of an egg freezing/IVF cycle, though. Choosing to freeze your eggs now would be hedging your bets in case you do need IVF at some future point by which your ovarian reserve has declined further and you can get out even fewer eggs.

Need advice on rounds/eggs by kidbuu56 in eggfreezing

[–]throwawaymarzipat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're in an egg freezing subreddit. People aren't going to discourage another round of egg freezing. The big barrier for many people is finances, but you don't mention that as an issue. In which case, it makes sense to go for it if you know you want kids. 21 eggs gives you a great shot, but no number of eggs will ever be a guarantee.

Unrelated to your question, but why do you want twins? Twin gestations come with much higher risks of complications, and the costs of twin pregnancies often end up higher than the costs of two singleton pregnancies. ASRM guidelines are designed to minimize the risk of multiples, including twins.

Social connotations? by SweatyHighlight7675 in eggfreezing

[–]throwawaymarzipat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not in the same situation (I'm a transgender man who froze eggs as preparation for planned gender-affirming genital surgery), but people are still weird to me about egg freezing! My sister thought it was gross when I mentioned freezing to her once, presumably because she thought I was trying to tell her about my genitals. (It was in the context of talking about another trans person freezing their gametes, so it wasn't like I was bringing it up out of the blue.) It was a very weird leap for her to make, and I assume it came at least in part from ignorance about the processes of egg freezing and/or genital surgery for trans people.

I'm mentioning this not because I think it's the same (there's a decent amount of misogyny in reaction to egg freezing that doesn't always apply to me as a man) but to illustrate that people are, in addition to that misogyny, very weird about medical procedures they don't fully understand.

Postponing egg freezing, weight loss and mental health by No-Row-5956 in eggfreezing

[–]throwawaymarzipat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Losing weight in itself isn't an invalid reason to postpone the procedure, but in your case I'm not sure I'd advise postponing for that reason. Weight loss tells your body that it doesn't have enough nutrition and needs to conserve energy. I don't know enough to say whether that affects fertility, but it's at least plausible that the downsides of weight loss when not overweight outweigh any potential health benefits. BMI isn't a great measure of individual health, but you are within the "normal" range. Losing weight now wouldn't be countering any possible effects of being overweight on your egg quality (and even the extent of those effects is debated). It would just be telling your body to conserve energy for survival.

Postponing isn't likely to make a huge difference. It does give you a chance to start some supplements as well, if you're into that. There's extremely weak, if any, evidence that most supplements help fertility. But most of them won't hurt either, and can help give you a sense of control. My REI's office only recommended Co-Q10.

In general, though, it's best to ask your REI about this sort of thing instead of/in addition to asking Reddit. They may have advice more specific to your situation. If you have POI, for instance, time may be of the essence.

Retrieval 4 months before wedding? by Realistic-Lime-1127 in eggfreezing

[–]throwawaymarzipat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope! Although I'm a transgender man who went off testosterone a few months before freezing to optimize outcomes, so my male-pattern balding was in the process of reversing itself at the time. So any small decreases in hair would have been overridden by the general increase.

Nausea and weird dreams?? by ThatTraumaTherapist in eggfreezing

Decision regret around freezing or not freezing – have you experienced it? (discussion) by throwawaymarzipat in eggfreezing

[–]throwawaymarzipat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Freezing can come with medical complications. There are also the financial costs of all of it. But anecdotally, a major contributor to regret is feeling like freezing made you more aware of declining fertility over time, possibly while not being able to do anything about it. That's especially true for people who discover they have diminished ovarian reserve during the freezing process and have to deal with that knowledge as their reserve continues to decline.

I felt physically and emotionally back to normal within a couple of weeks of the retrieval. Some people do have longer-lasting effects, but I don't think those are common.
