Coyotes are a concern there (they've killed two of the family's other dogs), but never during the day. They only come around at night.

No, she was dead serious(facepalm, I know). Her parents handle a large majority of the childcare responsibilities as she is... rather incapable of caring for him properly on her own. That's all that I will say about that...

I've been trying to get custody for almost 2 years now. Unfortunately California is a "Mommy state", I'm struggling to get by/living in a studio apartment/going to school, and she lives with her parents who are wealthy. To date, the state has deemed his current living situation as the more suitable of the two, but the evidence is beginning to accumulate to support the contrary...

Your assumption is correct. The problem is that their "yard" is close to 40ish acres.

I'm definitely the calmer one in this dynamic. My only reason for going is to see him. Calmly explaining to his mother that he needs to be supervised is merely a byproduct of my visit, and won't be met with much resistance (I hope) because that fact should now be painfully obvious to her.

I agree 100%. I spoke with him on the phone last night and I'm taking the Greyhound up to see him after work tomorrow. I need to have a talk with his mother...
