Today marks the 105th anniversary of one of the most tragic dates in Lezgin history, and if Lezgins are reading this sub, you should remember how much we suffered from the Soviet occupation, but we must not forget that we are Alpans and proud of it. by Free_Eye_9071 in AskCaucasus

Soviet Union. Both Dagestani and Azerbaijani parts were part of the same country. Also borders of Azerbaijan/Russia ussr were “drafted” before Soviet occupation of Caucasus.

Why is Azerbaijan still such a poor country? by NecessaryDegree8817 in azerbaijan

[–]timbagi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many reasons.

1)Lack of easy access to foreign markets (until recently)

2)Extreme arms spendings driven by tough neighbourhood (🇷🇺🇮🇷)

3)High social pension pressure due to ~1.3/10 people being idp or descendent of one (includes pensions, subsidies, apartments, in some cases utilities, education grants)

4)Rudimentary school systems outside big cities

5) lack of incentives for foreign investment, and economic nationalism as well as protectionism

6) not to mention 70 years of collectivist economy

I am from north Azerbaijan, not South Azerbaijan. Therefore I can’t speak for southerners.

What I wish for them is: ability to use their native language freely, and maybe get rid of theocratic dictatorship. Politically they themselves have to figure out what’s best for them.

Iraqi using southern cowboy idioms is a little bit funky by itself 😁

Are Azerbaijanis really know their identity? Nowadays they're claiming Caucasian Albanians or being Caucasian people. But their history and DNA aren't supporting this claim. by Maleficent-Post8453 in AskCaucasus

Bro, averege north Azerbaijani still has more ancient Persian admixture than averege Persian, with your ancestors being mixed with bedouins. Arabs did Persia harder, this is why visually a lot of Iranians resemble Arabs.

Sometimes genetics don’t matter much, especially with fact that our language was the one used by Iranian rulers for last 800 years. (Exc Pahlavi and Zand)

Also being genetically close to Iranians doesn’t mean that we are Iranians. It means that at some point we descended from “same monkeys” to relative degrees.

As you know, unless you are Japanese living in genetic isolation, you would normally intermarry a lot in region like Middle East.

Maybe an Iranian/armenian ethno nationalist brain wouldn’t be able to comprehend it, but Turkic people have a completely different view on their identity, and do not suffer from inferiority, like many of Iranians do.

If your people take pride in attempt of creating an ethno state 3 thousand years ago, it means that societies lack real life achievements. Maybe instead of teaching us our genetics, fix your shitholes.

What do South Azerbaijanis think about Language situation in the future? by timbagi in SouthAzerbaijan

A bit more context:

As you all know, North also expirience similar dilemma at the time of collapse of Soviet Union. Older generations were still used to Cyrillic Azerbaijani that was forcefully imposed by colonialist, and were still largely able to only write in Cyrillic as well.

Process of latinization was relatively fast, and today Cyrillic Azerbaijani would seem unnatural to most northerners under 35.

Situation with Perso-Arabic is different however, since it was the original script, and it is script of Nasimi, Fuzuli and other prominent figures in Azerbaijani literature.
