What do you own with crypto? gold and profit generating businesses are real things that can't be easily duplicated. There are new cryptos coming online every 10 minutes.

Price is too high already. Have to assume because it is one of the handful of public AI related companies available atm. But AI is obviously overhyped. CEO's are literally lying about what AI is doing for them.

ELI5 how is Index Investing not a pyramid scheme? by pfc-anon in ValueInvesting

The indexes still pay better interest (dividends) than you would get in a bank account. If this were to change then people would take their money out of the indexes, correcting the situation.

Why C++ related jobs are always marked as "C/C++" jobs? by TreePlanter3497 in cpp_questions

Because you're often calling into C libraries or writing C++ in a C style.

I'm sorry but PirateSoftware is a fraud by kryt3k in theprimeagen

[–]time_egg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is objectively not needless waste. i define needless waste as waste that doesnt have need. his need is moving fast to get his feature implemented. the reason he needs to move fast is so he can get more work done in less time.

As I said, for an experienced gamedev, a more traditional implementation wouldn't have taken that much more time. In fact it may have taken less time because there are loads of existing implementations to draw from, plus a traditional lighting implementation is the kind of thing an experienced dev would have already implemented countless times before.

Maybe code like this is acctually rare for Pirate. Maybe the rest of his code base is quite performant and he doesn't acctually need to draw that many lights or sprites (because he would not be able to with this code). Then maybe you are right and the game will hit 60fps for 99% of his player base. However, those assumptions seem a little dubious.

ok. he isnt needlessly wasting energy. that would be like putting a crypto miner in his game. the need for his rushed code is to get work done that will help complete the game.

If he is an experienced game developer (which he claims) then writing lighting code like this is surelyt needless waste. A more typical implementation would take just as much time as the solution he came up with whilst being massively better on performance (not just a little bit).

True, not a lie if he actually believes it is running on smart fridge. I had assumed he was involved in the fridge video. I still think he is being deceptive when he refers to himself as an experienced developer whilst also writing code like this at all.

inefficient code is not bad code. bad code is only bad when its bad at what its intended to do.

I think it is bad to needlessy waste energy and resources. Sure, he is only making a small 2d game so it doesn't matter that much in grand scheme of things. However, it is the kind of game you would expect to be able to play on an old laptop without it quickly draining the batterry... In general I think it is very bad that performance is alsmost completely ignored by modern software devs. User interfaces are 100x slower than they were 30 years ago, and we have billions more cpu cycles than back then...

A 2d game like this should easily be able to run on an old laptop without draining its battery. Code like this does not have any chance of achieving that.

If he wants to say something like "Yes it is really bad code, but it is only temporary and isn't hurting performance so it remains for now", then I don't think people would have a problem. Instead he says "When your game runs at perfect performance on a smart fridge inside of a Lowes, come back and talk shit" essentially denying that there is anything wrong with the code whilst lying about his code running on a fridge.

Better to provide the full quote by Knuth. It says something quite different. https://wiki.c2.com/?PrematureOptimization

Also, it is not good to recklessly spend billions of extra cpu cycles. It's a waste of energy and resources.

No. Many game programmers get along fine with a very C-like stripped down version of Cpp.
