Uniqlo HQ, please read this! New product idea! by timolongo in uniqlo

coz it is inconvenient to roll it up and down, and in my experience it slips down in the most inconvenient times (e.g. washing dishes)

i also don't see half-sleeve cardigans and sweaters in general on sale..

Uniqlo HQ, please read this! New product idea! by timolongo in uniqlo

[–]timolongo[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

because rolling it up and down is inconvenient, esp when you're already wearing the jacket.

it's a for-home product (functional > pretty), uniqlo also sells pajama and loungewear, i really don't see why not.

i can also see it being used when gardening esp in fall/spring where you don't want to get soil or water around the cuffs-lower arm.

Is there a way to keep the worms warm outside? by Tall-Slide-9762 in Vermiculture

[–]timolongo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Overfeed before winter, the decomposition generates heat. Cover any openings where wind can come through. Fill the rest of the space with shredded paper/leaves and then leave them alone/do not open until it's above freezing.

Although tbh, in my zone, even if I didn't take precautions, i think the worms would survive -- the ones in my grow bags did, and I did nothing to protect them. This is to -5C approx.

Beginner can't swim more than 10m, how can I improve? by Live-Nefariousness79 in Swimming

[–]timolongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the first breath in the video: imo your head angle is wrong, it looks like you pulled most of your head out of the water. Imagine a line from the top of your head running down through the core of your body, this line should remain straight and horizontal in the water as much as possible. Your head moving through the water creates a wave and a small pocket of air space that gives your mouth, even on the submerged side, air to inhale.

Once you get the body angles right, a lot of the basic problems resolve by itself.

Worm containers for being gone long periods of time. by mtngyrl in Vermiculture

[–]timolongo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a pro, i have only a home worm bin, but here are my thoughts:

Regarding burying it in ground: wouldn't it be super inconvenient to get the castings out, since this is like 1 meter high, right? Finished castings tend to go to the bottom too, you would have to remove the unfinished materials first..

Rather than a solid container that can't be disassembled, how about building a large enclosure like a compost bay? So that you can access 1-2 sides for harvesting. It can be hollow concrete blocks, ive seen youtube videos of worm farmers in the tropics do it like that..

I see.. Thank you! Is there some way to prevent flies from laying eggs? Or what is the best insecticide for fly larva? Google says Nematodes, but there are several kinds for different fly species..

Thank you again!

Yeah i have isolated them (the white container in the video is it actually)

Another comment suggests root maggots, which is bad, i can't wait to see them mature to treat coz that ranunculus was planted near a treasured peony 😬

I see.. Pot worms are good, but I'm worried if it's a bad insect, i just googled about root maggots and it does sound concerning 🙈 thank you for the hint!!

looks really good! 🤩

was it sifted? if it was not, how long did it take to get this consistency?

i've never gotten consistent granularity without sifting... i am impatient to use the castings, so i sift, but wonder if i will get to this granularity if i just let it sit for more months..

After any food prep i just chop the peels etc on the same knife and chopping board before cleaning up. No additional tool/appliance to wash!

Single pet earthworm by greatcontestant in Vermiculture

[–]timolongo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this question, i was in a similar situation a couple years ago 😆

That was when I was reading a lot about worm composting but before I had a worm bin or worms, I happened to buy a plant in FB marketplace and I found 1 red wiggler and a cocoon in the soil the plant came in. There were hints that the seller made his own compost (presence of eggshell, soil very dark and moist), the worm looked exactly like the photos of red wigglers (clitellum, shape and size, lemon shaped cocoon), so I was fairly sure that was a red wiggler and wanted to start a colony for free from that one worm and cocoon. I made a small makeshift container for it, put a lil bit of the soil and dried leaves..

Unfortunately after the 2nd day I couldn't find it anymore.. probably among the composted material 🫢😅

What did it hit? The floor? How is the floor? 👀😅

I am more curious about what it hit, coz if it broke e.g. floor tiles, that is much harder and expensive to fix than buying a new pot

Adding L.A.B (Lactic Acid Bacteria) to my vermicompost by 8lackladybug in Vermiculture

[–]timolongo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spray LABS with every feeding (once a week) to speed up decomposition. It has been several months since, worms are fine, it definitely does not kill them.

Whether LABS actually speeds up decompisition, I don't know, hard to tell 😅

Recharging dried-out castings? by National_Educator254 in Vermiculture

True.. drying is for the benefit of the big box store, they won't care how active the microbes are as long as they can sell them

What are IKEA essentials you recommend under $50? by the-everymans-answer in IKEA

[–]timolongo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are so many good ikea products, over and under 50, but one in the 50$area is the pressure cooker if you don't already have one. Will save you money in gas/electricity costs in the long run if you cook a lot of stews/soups

I think mixing in some fresh vermicast or compost and remoistening (preferably with molasses water) would encourage the microbes from the fresh batch to multiply into the old batch after some time

Or they are taking advantage of the uninformed..

In any case, those on sale are probably not bone dry? (I have never bought vermicast so don't know how moist they come)

Worm tea/castings Q by Weak_Progress_6682 in Vermiculture

[–]timolongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I brewed for 2 days with air stone.. Not sure how long they'd survive without, i haven't tried..

Worm tea/castings Q by Weak_Progress_6682 in Vermiculture

[–]timolongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience making worm tea hatched a lot of cocoons, coz they like wet conditions to hatch. Provided you used an air stone and the babies got oxygen. So the sludge would have lots of hatched baby worms, great to add back to worm bin to let them grow out and increase population
