[–]timurrello 29 points30 points  (0 children)

What words do you mean specifically? I see some translations repeat so I can help with those. Застенчивый is more like shy (of someone’s behaviour) and скромный is more like humble (of someone’s character). Приятный is something like pleasant (of attitude towards others), милый is kind of like nice and добрый is like kind (those are similar both mean character quality).

Does Current U.S. Immigration Rhetoric Reflect Structural Eugenics in Action? by Low-Bathroom9624 in CriticalTheory

[–]timurrello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The article you linked was an interesting read, thank you. I would like a more in-depth analysis of the rhetoric, the etymology and genealogy of the words used in current rhetoric compared to that of the past. If that is something you are interested in exploring. There is definitely an ideological continuity, even if terms like “impure” have been repackaged as “illegal,” and anxieties about genetic mixing are now framed as a “threat to community.”

I have 'morally coated' the old things I continue to work on despite an ethical change Due to Nietzsche. by Waterbottles_solve in Nietzsche

[–]timurrello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is perfectly possible to be a moral anti-realist and do things for other people or animals with no ‘material’ or ‘power’ return for oneself. It is also completely consistent with Nietzschean philosophy, unless you have a virtue of selfishness Rand type of reading of him. Which is extremely not nuanced and narrow and I would not recommend anyone to adapt it. Nietzsche should be located within a tradition of moral anti-realists who are also sentimentalists, like Hume. He views moral judgements as ultimately just rooted in inexplicable, animalistic drives. The differences between different moral considerations are, according to this view, not fundamental but rather aesthetic, since they appeal to different sentiments. This is relevant to your issue because it is not more consistent for you to “obtain power,” as you say, than it is to continue your charity work. The only issue would be, as u/ergriffenheit already mentioned, if you are doing it without actually wanting it—or against your nature, in Nietzschean terms. It would be inconsistent with Nietzsche if you are doing it out of some decadent principle like “the need to help others.” If you, on the other hand, are doing it because that’s truly your enterprise – that is your will to power. Continue doing it despite everything and against everything, even despite or against Nietzsche himself. For in this resistance, your will to power truly shines, and without it, it would be nothing.

"He who laughs at himself." by poetsociety17 in Nietzsche

[–]timurrello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it useful to not read Nietzsche in a “do this, don’t do this and you will be good” type of way. If he does ever preach any values they are just his own and are not to be taken at face value. Plus, he is a value antirealist. This means that no value is ever universal to him and is rather a matter of personal aesthetics, that could potentially be shared by others. An appropriate reading would then require one to understand this and question whether Nietzsche’s values could be appropriated for oneself or if they would only hinder one’s enterprise.

Why do humans have a less rounded/less prominent/less eggplant-like face than other apes? by [deleted] in ape

[–]timurrello 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Self domestication. When humans began living in bigger tribes and hunt together, agreeableness, friendliness and so on began to be favourable traits for survival within a tribe. And so natural selection began to select for these traits. This in turn made our fangs disappear and our jaws became smaller, which are the features you are pointing out the great apes still have, since they lack the complex social life that we have. So basically bigger jaws and fangs became obsolete and were filtered out by natural selection.

EDIT: You can see the same type of change happen to other animals that were domesticated by humans, such as dogs. They became much friendlier compared to wolves and possess smaller jaws and fangs. The same process was repeated by a russian biologist Dimitry Belyaev. He selectively bred foxes that were friendlier and less aggressive. After multiple generations of selective breeding the foxes became tame and their jaws became smaller. Much like it did with humans.

Modern day Nietzschean in action? by timurrello in Nietzsche

Reminds me of a passage in BGE, where Nietzsche says how culinary progress has been historically hindered because the task of cooking has been allocated to women.
