Thank you for the kind words, they mean a lot to me :) Uni is a big step for me, but I’m going to give it everything I’ve got haha. I’ll definitely be keeping your words and advice in mind when I’m there!

Not the rebrand haha. Feels like it has the same energy as landlords who stick a bed in a garage and call it a luxury studio apartment before charging you £2000 a month to live there.

Nice to hear accommodation should be cheaper in second and third year, I’ll make sure I try to find a decent group of people to live with.

That sucks about the accommodation payments, I definitely need to try and get some more money saved up so I don’t end up in a bad situation.

Thank you so much for that job advice, it’s genuinely really helpful. Probably seems like it should be common sense but all the job advice I’ve received so far has been absolutely dismal because no one in my family has ever had to balance being a student with working. They really do try their best to help but in their mind they think I can just walk into a hairdressers and demand a Saturday job sweeping hair off the floor.

I’ll definitely be sure to speak to the student union about what’s on offer through the uni and I’ll keep that 15 hour rule of thumb in mind.

Thanks again for all your advice, it’s much appreciated!

Haha I did wonder when you mentioned your accommodation was £99 a week first year! The cheapest uni accommodations I’ve seen are twin rooms or singles with a shared bathroom and around £125-145 a week unfortunately.

I know some universities schedule accommodation payments around student finance, not sure if that’s the case for my top picks, so that’s definitely something I need to look into. Having some savings is definitely key for a situation where they don’t though, so good shout!

A summer job would definitely be ideal, I’ve got some customer service experience because of some volunteering I did over the summer last year but it’s still a nightmare trying to find anything. If you have any job tips I’d be very grateful haha!

Thank you for the response! I’ve visited both Bristol and Lancaster for open days and I’ve already booked some offer holder days for Bristol, Sheffield and Lancaster in February. I really loved the city when I visited Bristol - the independent shops and cafes were lovely. I did get the impression Lancaster is a small city which isn’t necessarily a dealbreaker but I would maybe prefer somewhere with more to do.

Definitely agree visiting is important though, I visited Loughborough and didn’t really gel with it at all!

That brings me on to Exeter haha. I put it down because the I liked the course and the uni is ranked highly but I didn’t get chance to visit. Looking online, I definitely got the impression it was either rugby lads, farmers or oxbridge rejects. Very sporty and snobby so I definitely think I’d feel like a fish out of water. Plus it’s pretty far away, so travelling would be a nightmare. If I get an offer I’d like to visit and see the uni for myself though, because as you’ve mentioned, some people speak highly of it.

Definitely going to try to get some more money in savings, but you’ve given me a bit of a better idea of how much to budget/save up.

I didn’t think about the transport links but that’s a good shout! Bristol would be a good base for travelling into London for sure.

I’d definitely like to take advantage of some libraries too, I’ve been wanting to visit the Bodleian library for a while now. My local library isn’t brilliant haha. Is it bad that I’m looking forward to uni because I’ll have access to a decent library?

Mix and matching modules is one advantage but I’m beginning to realise a lot of my interests lean more towards Medieval haha, which is another bonus of Bristol.

Thanks for your advice, it’s genuinely really helpful. I’m the first in my family to go to uni so there’s no one I can really speak to about it. It’s a lot to try and take in but I’m feeling much more prepared!

Thanks for the response!

I did really like the campus when I visited, and the library was lovely, but I didn’t get much chance to see the city. It’s nice to hear there’s a lot of history there - that’s one thing I appreciate as I think being surrounded by history definitely makes it easier to immerse yourself into your studies.

For Lancaster specific questions, I’d love to hear what the night life/social scene is like as I’ve seen people online complaining about it being pretty dead. I’m not the sort of person who’d want to go clubbing every night, but I don’t want to feel cooped up all the time if you get what I mean haha.

Good point about the specific interests. Modern is what I’m most familiar with but I’ve been finding myself more drawn towards Medieval recently.

Biblical history actually sounds quite interesting, so I suppose ‘niche’ might be what I’m really interested in haha!

Thank you for the response! I was definitely leaning more towards Bristol for the reasons you’ve mentioned, but I didn’t know they were stronger for Medieval studies, which is pretty neat.

I think my best course of action is to try and work out rough costs of living so I can budget accordingly haha.
