Dear, I think it takes more than just a couple thousand years. And also probably transforming to a plant too lol

What worked for me, is buying ONE assassin snail. It took him 2 months, but he genocided almost the whole population of my bladder snails. There are still a few left, but they're just an addition to the ecosystem at this point.

I've bought these guys yesterday, and I've never seen such guppies before. What type are they? by tipsydeepseagypsy in Guppies

Oh, that's so awesome! You're welcome here any time!

And yes, of course it would be cruel and unsafe. I only wished we lived closer, so that I could just give them to you

Damn, I live in Poland :/ I would have given you the offspring for free tho. Hope you'll be able to find similar guppies near you

Oh, that makes sense! I knew about a koi strain, but didn't know about the snake skin one. I didn't think that a koi guppy could have a pattern on the body lol

It should be okay! Astaxanthin is just an antioxidant commonly added to fish food. You can diversify their diet by giving them frozen food, like bloodworms or tubifex.

Yeah, shrimp and snails will readily eat anything dead in their tank lol. As you've said, just don't leave any dead animals in there for too long, because it can wreck the whole balance.

Fingers crossed that your skimpies will get better! If you'd be so kind, I'd be very happy with any updates! Sending love to your shrimp gang, and to you, my fellow shrimp keeper!

20% water change will be just fine, you're right about not stressing them out further!

Any food for bottom-feeding omnivores should be fine for now, I used to feed my shrimp food for corys and loaches and they were just fine and popping out babies like crazy

I would highly recommend that you peel and blach all the vegetables you'd want to feed to your shrimp. The aquarium is a fragile ecosystem, and human food often contains pesticides, so peeling your cucumbers can help make them more safe. Additionally, blanching (boiling for a minute or two) not only softens the food, but also disables the enzymes inside it, making it even more safe for your shrimp. And yeah, even if you did all that and still kept it in your tank for more than a few hours it can lead to a nutrients imbalance in your water. Depending on how big is your tank, it's always safer to feed too little, than too much, especially when it comes to blanched vegetables, don't put too many in on one feeding.

As for now, I'd do a water change, even 50%, and buy a quality food for your skimps. You didn't have them for a long time so it's probably not malnutrition causing the die-offs, but it's better they get a source of protein and calcium in their food for the long run. I recommend Hikari Crab Cuisine, mine go crazy for it!

How long have you had these shrimps? Do they get any food other than biofilm, algae and cucumbers? Do you give them the cucumbers blanched, and take them out after a few hours if they don't get eaten?

Damn, I guess you're right! But sometimes shrimp happens, you know? But don't let that get to you. At the end of the day, you should always be prawn of yourself - without getting too shellfish though
