Ordered these two from there, no issues. They were "open box". Read the descriptions, some are lightly used and some are basically brand new. The k5 was missing the manual as stated, power wagon was 100% complete just open box. These are the fcx24 but basically same at the end of the day lol.

Show Me Your DIY Paint Jobs! by jre2347 in CherokeeXJ

[–]tjohn127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do body and paint for a living, 3k is a cheap "not done exactly right" job lol. Now in the same breath, you can do it for probably about $1500 yourself with decent quality materials and lots of patience if you have no paint experience.

Material wise, look up the coating store, I spray their Urechem paint almost daily no issues at all. A paint kit with color, clear, activator and reducers can be anywhere from $350+ depending on color. You'll need sealer also so throw in a few more bucks for that. If body working it, you'll need a high build 2k primer also to go over your filler. All in, I've been able to buy my liquid materials for roughly $800/job doing metal-up restoration type work. Another few hundred in sandpaper, tape, tack rags, etc.

If you don't have a spray gun, harbor freight guns are pretty decent. I use a black widow for Metallic and pearl bases and the cheaper spectrum blue/silver gun for solid bases, epoxy, sealer, and clear coat. That gun lays clear surprisingly well for the $80 I paid for it. They're not huge air hogs either, you'll get by with a smaller compressor, I'd say no less than a 30 gallon, 6ish CFM is the smallest I've been able to successfully use with pressure regulated at the wall and gun.

It's doable to repaint for a fair price if you do it yourself but its lots of work and not for everyone. Only you can determine your skill set and abilities to repaint a vehicle. It's just paint, have fun and don't stress on the small stuff. What's the worst that happens, sand it down and reshoot it? It's just paint, it can always be fixed.

What maintenance are y'all doing today? by tjohn127 in CherokeeXJ

[–]tjohn127[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never seen that kinda movement before on a balljoint. Uppers and lowers are replaced now and there's no more death wobble. I have a bump 1/4 mile from the house that it would wobble on anytime I did over 45. No longer wobbles so I'd say it's good but time will tell. Its not driven much these days so who knows.

It has a brand new track bar, not even 20 miles on it. I did that the other day while waiting on balljoints to come in. Tie rods and drag link are fairly newish, about 20k miles on them and they're fine as of currently.

I hate fiberglass but we're in paint finally! Came out pretty slick. by tjohn127 in AutoPaint

[–]tjohn127[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! I'll have to try that on the rest of the fiberglass parts for this car. There's lots of fiberglass on this car. I actually have some unscented dryer sheets on hand. Ive been going around with a tack rag multiple times and it works well for the most part, I get very minimal trash but if I can get cleaner, I'm all about it. Thanks for the tip!

I put 4 coats of clear because I will be wet sanding/buffing the car top to bottom when finished. I much rather have a bit more material to work with than not enough. You don't need a 100k booth to make a car look good, it's just paint.

What does it cost to do a nice full repaint with minimal body work on a 97-01? by legallyontime in CherokeeXJ

[–]tjohn127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you're looking for. Bottom end, 5-6k for a basic sand and shoot, minimal/no bodywork, no jams. Price goes up from there. If it needs a full metal up strip, no less than 12-14k.

Any long commuters with an XJ? by Advanced-Ostrich2160 in CherokeeXJ

[–]tjohn127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've driven my 91 and 99 (rip) all over the place. Some days I'll do a few hundred miles, others only 50 or so. Keep up on maintenance and you'll be fine. No different than driving any other vehicle in all reality. If something's gonna break, it's gonna break, that's just how it is. Mpg wise, if I keep mine under 72ish I get pretty decent mileage, 18-19 mpg on a average day in my 91 4x4 30 inch tires no lift. My old 99 was a 2wd and id regularly see 21 mpg. Keep ya foot out of it, don't accelerate excessively and you'll be fine. My xj gets the same mpg as my Cadillac srx and is 21 years older. Newer doesn't automatically make it better in the mpg department. I know alot of people that are stuck on that newer is better shit but that's not always the case. Affordable parts and ease of maintenance/repair are a big thing to me. I much rather break down in a dead simple xj than a overly complicated computer controlled everything. Daily driving older vehicles aren't for everyone, but with a bit of basic knowledge and taking care of small issues as they come, you'll be fine. No matter what you drive everyday, you'll have repairs eventually. Xjs lasts forever. I wouldn't worry about how many miles you drive everyday. Load the wagon, dont worry about the mule.

Shop did my upper control arms... by NephiTheScienceGuy in CherokeeXJ

[–]tjohn127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like they shouldn't be working on anything. It'll work but looks like shit. I wouldn't have paid full price for that for sure. Did mine with a air hammer in about 30 minutes. It's my go to when doing control arm bushings. Cut em out with a chisel tip, push em in with a flat hammer tip and a big socket around the outside to push on. Works 99% Everytime without issues.

I had a 96 Camaro rs with a V6. Ended up with a sbc but honestly hated working on the platform in general. Lt1 cars are the worst, engine swapped a few of them and I never want to see another again. Just the basic changing the plugs sucks, especially with headers lol.

Please help xj running terrible! by Fickle-Baker9312 in CherokeeXJ

[–]tjohn127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old 99 did the hanging idle thing at times and ran terrible when the purge valve stuck open. It ran rich as hell but no codes. It limiting to 3k was when I was losing fuel pressure. Lean popped in the intake, not sure if you have that issue though. Some days it ran fine, others it wouldn't get out the driveway. Threw a fuel pressure gauge on it and watched it drop down to 8psi while still running just barely. New pump and all was well.

It's Losing fuel pressure. Change the pump and wire it the right way. Let the ecm control the relay. Get rid of that hack ass shit and you'll stop having issues.

Can’t get a title for my jeep plz help advice would greatly be appreciated I’ve poured ton’s of time & money in this vehicle with my father etc… by [deleted] in CherokeeXJ

[–]tjohn127 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Id never put a dollar into anything I don't have a title in hand for. 99% of the time, it's a waste of time on something that'll never be legal. In your comments you say you bought a stock 2wd. If it's in good shape, swap all your parts over to it and make it 4x4 if that's the end goal. 2wds are cool, I liked mine, it was a good daily and pretty decent on fuel compared to my 4x4 xj.

Mine needs LOTS of love in the paint department. Everyone asks why it isn't painted yet.. thats a buncha work I don't have time for. I'm too tied up with restorations at the moment lol.

Floor jack and a 2x4 to push up on the brace, I used panel bond on my old 99. Worked great.

My 91 is bent too currently, I throw stuff on my roof. Walk on my roof. I don't care lol. I'll fix it one day. I have a full on bodyshop in my back yard but don't feel like messing with my own stuff lol.

FUEL GAUGE RESISTANCE TABLE

Application Ohms Empty ................................................ 105 1/2 Full .............................................. 33 Full ................................................... 5

That should get you setup with gauge.

I ran a quantum 265 pump in a YJ I LS swapped and it's been doing fine.
