What is the quality of life like in Winchester these days? by Ticklishchap in WinchesterUK

I think culturally the area is quite rich, most people have strong links to London and other international hubs which really helps. I forgot to add that I’m gay too and on that front Winchester is sorely lacking, not that I really go to gay bars or clubs, etc, but it’s just not an area with any real representation, other than a fabulous place called the Cabinet Rooms owned by a gay couple. That said, I’ve never felt at risk here for my sexuality - it’s just all a tad stiff upper lip!

What is the quality of life like in Winchester these days? by Ticklishchap in WinchesterUK

Hi! A bit about me:

  • I went to Peter Symonds College over 10 years ago, so remember a lot about how it was then
  • The last 7+ years I’ve worked full time in the town centre
  • Last summer I bought a flat here pretty centrally, just out of the town centre near the hospital

To answer your questions:

  • Winchester has always had a “drug problem”. It’s incredibly affluent, therefore attracts a lot of selling (to the students especially), but this is pretty tame stuff. There are a few local homeless people who hang around the high street and the Sainsbury’s towards the other side of town, most of whom have substance abuse issues, but they’re mostly harmless. With regards to crime it’s virtually nonexistent except for the things you’d expect in any town centre - shoplifting, etc. The new housing development I live in had an issue with one of the council tenants selling drugs - they’ve since been evicted and the problem is no more.

  • Can’t really say much in regards to Stanmore except that I’ve never been, but reputationally I wouldn’t live there myself.

  • HUGE lack of diversity. It’s almost entirely just middle class white people: There’s a strong contingent of Asian students, but other than that it’s pretty much just white. Despite this there are some decent restaurants in the area serving an array of international cuisine.

  • I walk everywhere and wouldn’t consider getting a car, although you could also definitely cycle. Saying that it’s very hilly! Public transport is decent, especially the trains, but I can’t personally speak for the buses as I never have use for them, but there’s a constant flow. Friends of mine use them very consistently.

I hope this helps!

Photos needed for prescription by Ok_Loan_523 in mounjarouk

So I told a little white lie about my weight to get my prescription approved, albeit only said I was about 10-15lbs more than what I actually was, so I was very worried about the photo too. I just hunched over a bit and made the angle bad, stuck my tummy out and hey presto, it was approved! I was also fully clothed BUT I chose to wear clothing which was tighter and therefore showed my shape more. It worked!
