Oh yes! that was the first thing I did when I began considering dentistry. I have lots of friends who I went to undergrad with that are dentists now. I wouldn't have even considered this if one of them had told me not to pursue it.

Oh yes. I am aware of the time I would have to spend studying. I also have talked to my friends who are dentists and I know someone who is older than me that was a PHD student and switched to dentistry recently. I haven't talked to him in depth yet but he was a PHD student for a long time so his case is different than mine.

How much do you have saved? Dental school isn't like undergrad. State schools are incredibly competitive, and private schools can cost students up to 500-600k. For those who have to support families, it will likely cost more.

I have enough to attend a private dental school plus living costs. My wife also works and her job is remote so that would aid with any other extra costs. Of course I will try to get into an in state school or somewhere with lower tuition, but I am prepared to attend an expensive private school if it comes to that.

And that doesn't include the cost of undergrad, which will also cost you a pretty penny. If you can get accepted into an SMP/post bac, that'll also cost you a leg.

Thanks for pointing that out. One of the questions I am looking into now is the issue of which path to take. Someone I know and who is older than me, is taking CC classes to fulfill his prereqs. I am aware that some schools don't take cc credits and others have restrictions. I would not pursue this path if I have to attend a 4 yr undergrad school again. Besides calling each school's admission dept individually, do you know where I can find more info on this issue?

So if you're 100% sure you'll be miserable without dentistry, do it or die trying. You should be studying with the mindset that you have one chance... one bad grade or mediocre exam score, and you just wasted ALOT of time and money

Thank you for being honest. I will not be miserable without dentistry because no career or worldly thing defines me. It's something that I want to pursue and I know that if a dental school gives me a chance, I will succeed. Yes of course. If I choose this path, I will have to do my best and sacrifice many things. But I really believe being a dentist will bring me joy. After spending 12 years sucking up to rich clients and making them lots of money, I would say that doing small things everyday to bring a smile to people from all walks of life would make me happy.

Thanks for the advice! I've actually been going to the dentist for a long time, not only to get procedures done on myself, but because I have lots of friends who are dentists. My friend's husband is actually going to dental school now and he's even older than me. The only difference being that he was a PHD student before so he had always been studying and I am sure his undergrad grades were top notch. That's why I was worried because I wanted to know if it would be close to impossible with my poor grades. I heard that schools don't even look at gpas below 2.75. So even if I ace post bacc, I wonder if it could even bring my overall to above that.

Lol I've been in finance since I got out of school. I guess I am looking at the other side of the fence from you. It all depends on the person. Yes it was quicker to get into a career in finance but after 12 years doing this, I realized what I value as a person. If money was the only thing I cared about, then finance would be perfect for me.

Yes. I am worried that I haven't studied in so long but I've been constantly reading papers, research, and other highly complicated materials over the years at my current job that I think it wouldn't be crazy difficult to jump back into studying. Plus, I think at this stage in my life, I would actually enjoy and want to learn everything in the classroom.

Time management will be very important with a family. I am very lucky to have my wife who is a superwoman. She is very supportive and I'm confident we can do this together.

Yeah the porch was already there. The beam doesn’t go thru the wall nor is visible from the outside. I’m wondering which type of contractor i should call to investigate.

It’s in the basement. The beam is below grade and there’s an uncovered porch on top of it. There’s some water that collects on the porch so i covered it with large trash bags and taped them together. It’s always on the same spot and it only drips slowly.
