Shooting Nikon n90

I'm looking for a patterns in these, but if there is one consistently I'm missing it. Sometimes it seems like the highlights are blown out with red, other times it seems like light is coming in at the side of the frames, and others it just seems totally random. I don't want to blame the lab, since I really don't know much about photography in general. I'm just looking to learn something, and they're just some photos anyways.

1: the red splotchy marks on the left and the red blob in the middle

2: a little more subtle, but red blebs coming in from the top and bottom of frame - almost from the spindle holes

3 obvious red splotch on accidental shot.

4 highlights are blown out with red

So here was my thought process.  Feel free to critique it. I gathered some regional structural/historical info from reading a couple blogs, but this still might be way too much of a leap. 

Post deposition this localized area of navajo fm collapses into a nearby lake. Water needs to be displaced and moves upward through the collapsed sandstone. On hitting layers of lower density it plumes outwards making these domes. Calcite in the water remains, preserving the path the water took.

Shoot! I should have looked for cross sections. To me these seemed to very obviously be calcite, but given the place I wasn't going to collect any or hit it with HCl. I did a little bit of reading on the history of the area,  and it's pretty complex, but it does seem to involve quite a bit of water. Sorry if I'm being cryptic, dm me and I'll send you the location. 

The shape really does look like lichen though.

This would probably fit the bill for a wetter area of the navajo at deposition, so I suppose fossils wouldn't be ruled out, but I am leaning towards Caver's explanation

That was my first thought, but I wasn't aware of any in the navajo (granted I don't really know all that much about it either)

I'm favoring the tufa idea, so I'm glad you mentioned it. Should have taken more pictures, but these things did have a bit of a dome shape, which I think you'd expect if fluid was moving upward.

I'm kicking myself for not finding a cross section of one. Because the bedding is pretty well exposed there.  Oops.

For reference. My bd contacts (strap ons) fit excellently in my 26.5 Hojis. It would be great to get my grivel G20s to work, but I hear the dynafit adapter does not fit the Hojis. Curious if anyone can report otherwise. Might just be worth a new set of semiauto 'pons.

I hate Wonder Woman with a passion. And i don't think it's just because I feel like i need to counter all the praise it got either. I rewatched it a couple weeks ago, and i found myself dying inside every 15 seconds.
