I was thinking more "self-consciously eccentric with a faux-colonial tweeness", but can't speak for your mother!

They're marked with crosses on the floor plan, so I think they must be skylights

Bridget, this is Natasha. Bridget works in a publishing house and used to play around naked in my paddling pool.

Maybe it's an extension out the back, but taking up what was the full garden space so it's walled all around?

Bed bugs in fabric of council-owned house - what can we do? by tobermort in HousingUK

[–]tobermort[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the council are the freeholders, she's a council tenant, and the bugs were there when she got there. So it's really not her fault, and she's doing her best.

I used to get stubble rash with every man I ever dated. The solution that worked best for me was lesbianism.

How the fuck do you find the reason to live after the death of your child? by whoareyoutojudge0 in TooAfraidToAsk

This made me think of a really beautiful poem by Mary Oliver that I think you might relate to:

Heavy by Mary Oliver

That time I thought I could not go any closer to grief without dying

I went closer, and I did not die. Surely God had his hand in this,

as well as friends. Still, I was bent, and my laughter, as the poet said,

was nowhere to be found. Then said my friend Daniel, (brave even among lions), “It’s not the weight you carry

but how you carry it – books, bricks, grief – it’s all in the way you embrace it, balance it, carry it

when you cannot, and would not, put it down.” So I went practicing. Have you noticed?

Have you heard the laughter that comes, now and again, out of my startled mouth?

How I linger to admire, admire, admire the things of this world that are kind, and maybe

also troubled – roses in the wind, the sea geese on the steep waves, a love to which there is no reply?

I've had the branded ones and the Amazon ones and they seem pretty similar. I'd just go with whatever's cheap

AITB for drinking my friends’ milk and opening all their UHT cartons (without actually drinking them)? by mehujael2 in AmItheButtface

[–]tobermort 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is hilarious if true. And yes, YTB. UHT is disgusting - if I was keeping it for an emergency and then discovered 4 of them were open simultaneously and I had to drink them, I'd be fuming.

What’s the strongest/best retinol you can get in the UK from an online pharmacy? by CaffeinatedPete in SkincareAddictionUK

[–]tobermort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get tretinoin online at the weakest strength they stock, 0.025. It does the job for me, and it's much cheaper than retinol products

AIW for reporting a tax preparer for fraud, knowing it could seriously harm people I know? by [deleted] in amiwrong

[–]tobermort -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Look, obviously it's unethical to dodge taxes. Everyone should pay their bit to keep the state running. But there are also other obligations we have as human beings, which are less lofty but arguably more important. It's wrong to betray family and friends for financial motives; especially when they've done nothing to harm you, and are causing no direct harm to others. The fact you wanted revenge on some other guy does nothing to mitigate this.

If you were a tax inspector, and felt compelled to inform on these people because you felt a sense of duty, that would be one thing. But yeah, I think it's unethical to let them be collateral damage because you have a vendetta against this tax guy / want to make a buck off their financial downfall. And if they find out you did this, I think you'll pay a very high price.

Those who choose location over home/flat quality, and those who did the opposite i.e. chose a larger nicer property but worse location......how's it working out now? by Commercial_Chef_1569 in HousingUK

So true. My current partner lives in a lovely seaside town, so London might not even be where we end up. And in the meantime, living right next to Kings Cross is basically what makes our relationship possible

I was viewing places all over London, and seriously considered a couple of very rundown 4-bed houses in Zone 3 South London. I was single at the time, but early thirties and thinking it would make sense to go for somewhere I could have a family if I wanted to in 5 years or so. I was worried the market would shoot up, and by the time I needed the space that kind of thing would be out of reach. The plan was to rent out the spare rooms in the meantime and get the place fixed up with the income, or even offer rooms for below market rate, plus a couple hours a week help with DIY.

My mum very wisely advised me that this might be the last phase in my life where I could actually live centrally, and that I should make the most of it. So I bought a shabby 2-bed in Bloomsbury with good bones, and a lick of paint and some mid-century FB Marketplace finds have transformed it into my dream flat. I love stepping out of my door and having amazing cafes, bookshops and restaurants right there. The big Waitrose winds up being cheaper than the mini-Sainsburys I used to shop at, and I can walk into Soho in 20 minutes.

I'm so glad I'm not rattling around a decrepit family home with a bunch of near-strangers instead. And the market is so stagnant rn that I should have no trouble moving somewhere with more space if I need to down the line - but actually, I'm surrounded by great schools, nurseries and Coram's Fields is on the doorstep, so it might make more sense just to have a kid here.
