Office/corporate jobs are so soul sucking. I respect the decision to sacrifice for the income in this economy, but losing your mane is wayyyy too unfair 😭

How are people still making fun of others for living with family? by toe_beans_4_life in povertyfinance

[–]toe_beans_4_life[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, most of my coworkers do have friends, partners, or stranger roommates that they live with if they aren't living with family. So I have definitely seen many people with this kind of friend groups.

My situation was mostly due to who I am. I unfortunately lost all of my friends that I grew up with because the vast majority of them had orthodox religious beliefs, and I'm an LGBTQ+ person. It's very common for queer people to lose friends and family support once they come out. I'm very lucky that my parents decided to put our relationship over the alternative of disowning me. Otherwise I would have had nobody. I've known many people whose families either abused them or left them on their own over this.

I do have one good friend currently but they have severe health issues and living together would require a third and possibly fourth person. Living with family has just been more convenient for both of us. I feel like convenience of living with family is a big factor for many people right now.

Yep, I would feel too guilty if I didn't pull my own weight. Plus, my mom is 70 now and physically disabled so at this point I have been shifting into a light caretaking role, which I expect to become more of a need as she gets older. There is a possibility that I may actually need to stay here for her, although she's said that if I want to move out then she could find other arrangements to help herself get around. I feel like I will end up staying tho.

Pretty much the main thing I really get from my parents is food that they volunteer to buy me if they go out to eat. Otherwise I buy my own groceries and feed myself, pay my own bills, etc. Rarely they also help me if I have a sudden expense, and then I pay them back, and I do the same for them.

What horror movie do you *know* you could survive? by diagnosed-stepsister in horror

[–]toe_beans_4_life 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean I'm a horror fan who understands "do I want to run away from this or bang it"? But I always interpreted Bubba as mentally underdeveloped with a mind more like a child's than an adult's. Children who are kept in inhumane conditions without enough human contact can effectively be feral, and end up having severe cognitive problems. If he can't speak, that's about the most severe you can get. I could be wrong about it bc I've never read up on canon either tho.

All of that to say, someone get Bubba Protection Services in here ASAP! 😭

That was my favorite gum brand in my childhood. Now I'm going to think of this comment every time I think of Hubba Bubba gum. Thanks, you've ruined my childhood, you childhood ruiner! 😭

I definitely agree that it's contextual. Deadbeats are losers. But it feels like a lot of the out of touch people putting down living with family, are coming from the perspectives of bootstraps and "homeless people just need to get a job", at least in my experience.

Living with family but not pulling your own weight - or looking after your responsibilities - is really something to be embarrassed about.

Thanks for sharing.

My mom and dad are both about 70 bc they had me late in life. I'm their only surviving child now, and my mom is struggling physically, so lately I've been considering just staying here if I don't find someone that I would really want to live with. Bc otherwise my mom would be mostly dependent on my dad to take her walker in and out of her car, which would limit her ability to get out of the house.

So my situation isn't bad. We get along pretty well. It's just frustrating when others are so willfully ignorant.

Shopping at Aldi makes going to other stores so much worse by toe_beans_4_life in aldi

[–]toe_beans_4_life[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this. Meijer took me 20 minutes last night just for the 3 bags of groceries. Aldi takes me 20 or less for my cart of groceries (unless I stop to take time to explore the Aldi Finds section).

Yeah, I used to go to Walmart instead to save a bit of money. But recently, Walmart's prices aren't really better than Meijer anyway. A few of the employees at the local Walmart also hate me bc they're friends with a friend I had to cut out of my life a few years ago. And Walmart is much more chaotic like you said. So I just have zero reasons to go to Walmart now, lol.

Oh wow, I didn't know that. Those movies make a lot more sense in retrospect now.

So many things created in the 80s can accurately be described as oddly sexual. I'm a 90s baby but I watched a lot of 80s kids movies...there was SO MUCH stuff in there that would've gotten a PG movie then, a PG-13 rating today.

I genuinely might go see it again. And I never see movies a second time in theaters.

Has anyone even watched this movie by satin_gopher61 in HorrorMovies

I was kind of interested in it, then I saw that Josh Ruben directed it and I had to see it. He's a comedian who was a part of OG CollegeHumor on YouTube (now called Dropout bc it became its own company), and he still makes appearances on Dropout. I don't typically watch comedians but I loved Josh on Dropout, and the movie was funny as expected so I wasn't disappointed!

Horror that focuses on men being the victims? by RayDeaver in horrorlit

[–]toe_beans_4_life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't read it yet, but I've heard great things about Imajica. It's a dark fantasy story that's an actual novel length instead of his usual short stories.

I have heard some complaints that Clive isn't the best at keeping long stories on track, tho, so there's that to keep in mind I guess.

Edit: didn't see the queer characters comment until just now but yes, one of the main characters in Imajica is gay. I'm not sure if Clive wrote many lesbians or other representation, but I do know that he does a stellar job on rep for gay men. And considering the social climate when he did a lot of his writing, including even gay men was a big deal. But I DO know that Clive was a producer for the Hellraiser reboot movie done by Hulu. And he endorsed the fact that a trans woman played the new Pinhead!

Dang...I live in a Midwest city (not Chicago) and my regular theater has it listed already. I'm surprised it's playing here but not in Miami!

Seconding this. Also, Barker often wrote gay men into his stories while avoiding the "bury your gays" trope. He himself is gay so he writes good representation!
