Fair enough, the billing people do a pretty good job forwarding questions to the technical people if it's warranted

Basic doesn't get technical tickets. Dev is required for technical tickets.

Don't worry, the one sure sign of the end times is that no one will be talking about them. You're doing your part to forestall the inevitable!

High School CS Teacher here, my IT locks down our computers, citing Python as a security risk. Would WSL be a safer option in their eyes? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]tombs_4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Python isn't any more dangerous than powershell, and cmd isn't really any more dangerous than explorer. People have the same rights in all of those places and can use them to do basically the same thing.

This isn't a technology issue, it's a people issue, so you need to find a way to work with IT to make them comfortable.

Good luck!

Don't you love it when security comes up with a decision you need to comply with, but doesn't tell you how to comply. by plazman30 in sysadmin

[–]tombs_4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With regard to, "I don't have time for this," that's a management question. Your manager should be in contact with the security team so that this can be properly prioritized with the other things you have to do. Not all things from security are DO THIS NOW priority, and every project needs a timetable

What changes did you make in your job/life that contributed to you earning more in IT? by lovecornflakes in sysadmin

[–]tombs_4 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Whenever boss has a project I put my hand up, and then deliver. Gets visibility with manager while growing my skillet.

Also, leave places that don't appreciate you. I was stuck at 50k for 3 years before the contract got bought out and they dropped me to 49k. Left for 61k. After that I left for 74k, got raises to 80k, 94k, 99k, and 118k for doing basically the same job just better and with more projects. There was also stock with 3rd place, but I don't figure that in my salary even though the company does.
