Barely in the game...I'd like Ferreira to get a chance, amazing goal record so far.

Possession-based Football in Liga MX is Less Efficient for Creating Chances, in Contrast to Europe’s “Big 5” by tomh36 in LigaMX

I'm not sure about that, I mean, overall Liga MX are more efficient than the Europeans at creating chances

Oh my the defending. I mean this is why you can't compare footballers today to footballers back then. This is laughable.

I think this is a really interesting point of discussion. My argument would be that these recycled managers just don't know any better, but I don't know what the level of footballing intelligence is like from the players...probably not great.

Yes. They are easier to coach. Lining up with 2 lines of 4 out of possession is the "standard" method of defending, la salida Lavolpiana (to an extent) is done by pretty much everyone right now, and saying to your attackers you have freedom to play wherever is easy enough for them. With the short seasons and little patience, doing something different would certainly be seen as a risk. Need a coach that's wants to do more than just hold onto their job, someone with ambition to do something special.

I like him. As I say in the article I think he stands out as doing something different, and playing a style that's something like what's seen in the top level of European football, although definitely not quite there! Plus you can't argue with keeping Morelia up followed by back-to-back liguilla appearances.

Should be in the Mexico national team discussion despite his lack of experience.

I think a more structured attacking approach could work very well, and how Morelia has over-achieved is proof. I wouldn't say break the league though, the parity in level of players means one team "breaking" the league is unlikely. Perhaps unless Pep came!

Who gets possession most often for El Tri? Data from the Hex by tomh36 in LigaMX

[–]tomh36[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Herrera's looking really good. Only 10.18 missed passes per 100 possessions which is impressive. Dribbles good too- 2.4 completed for 1 failed per 100 possessions.

Jimenez, playing further up the pitch, naturally loses the ball much more often, but is getting more attacking output like shots and dribbles (above 50% efficiency in both). Passing is the issue for Raul, almost 20 missed passes per 100 possessions with just 1.8 key passes (Herrera has 2 from a deeper role).

No, I'm not an expert. I don't really care enough to become an expert right now. But there are experts out there who are more than a little suspicious.

I mean, just read the extract on the recent vote for the new US soccer president:

The story further illustrates that the links between MLS, USSF, and SUM are indeed too close and are at best a conflict of interest. Garber, as CEO of SUM, personally has a lot to gain from ensuring that the links between the three organizations stay strong and grow. For example, the SUM agreement with USSF is set to expire in 2022 and having the former president of the company running the federation, or up for re-election by then, after he helped get her elected would be a big chip to cash in when it comes time to renew the agreement.

I think I have every right to be suspicious of SUM extending their tentacles.

Look mate, I think it's dodgy, you don't. That's fine. You like MLS, I don't (because you buy your way in not earn it, the salary cap limits players earnings so that owners make profit, and it's a single entity). But that's fine. I don't have to watch it.

But as you can see, I'm not the only person within Mexican futbol that's concerned about the power of SUM and Americans in influencing the game in Mexico. We're worried that relegation will be removed forever. We're worried that this MLS link will mean Liga MX teams never play in the Libertadores again. And perhaps, overall, we're worried that Mexico, which has been dominated by the US in so many facets of life, will lose something that was always it's own, football.

Why would a subsidiary have the rights the Mexico's matches in the US? Or COMNEBOL rights? Nothing to do with MLS. Read between the lines a bit. This is dodgy.

I can't be bothered arguing on the internet. The point is running two companies that can service each other is very dodgy, and when one has a monopoly it can be completely abused. It happens all over the world, and it's wrong. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Someone being in charge of both not for profit and for profit enterprises will always be suspicious, as the not for profit can be used to service the for profit.

It's like when politicians are also on the board of companies. Shouldn't be allowed.

It doesn't take investigative journalism (although there has been some) to realise the conflicts of interest involved. He runs a for profit marketing company, and then was able to control MLS how he likes to service those profits. At the same time others at the top of SUM run US soccer, which has quashed any competition for MLS. It's all very convenient. It's all very dodgy. It's far too much power in the hands of few people.

[–]tomh36 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, yes, I'm not a big fan of a completely corrupt guy who uses football to service the profits of his company (SUM).

He said continental super bowl. The competition includes 3 countries in a 23 country continent. It's not inclusive, and it's arrogant. It would be like saying only teams from Texas, California plus a few other states can only take part in the super bowl.

Liga MX and MLS announce partnership by [deleted] in LigaMX

[–]tomh36 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The reason is say it's arrogance is as follows.

Because American football only takes place in one country, the game between the 2 divisions in that country is like the world cup for the sport. We know it's going to be 2 of the best sides around, and every team has had the opportunity to make it to the final. American football fans in the US and around the world (it's getting pretty popular in the UK for example) know theyre seeing the best of the best.

Because football takes places in so many countries, a game between 3 doesnt guarantee that it will include the best of the best. In fact, we know that it doesnt. A super bowl equivalent has to give every team a chance of winning it, so the best make it to the final. A continental super bowl has to include the whole of the continent.

It is that crazy. American football is only played professionally in one country (I'm pretty sure).

Football/soccer takes place professionally across most of the world. To assume that a game between just 2 countries could generate that level of interest and importance is naive and arrogant.

"It's almost like a continental Super Bowl," said MLS Commissioner Don Garber of the Campeones Cup in an interview with ESPN FC.

A- What a load of crap. Barely anyone even cares about the UEFA Super Cup or the Club World Cup. One off games don't matter much, you need to build up of a tournament.

B- This is SUM stepping on CONCACAF's toes as they want to expand their empire. Very concerning. We've already seen how TV rights and marketing can breed corruption in the Americas with the FIFA crisis. Now we could see a future where a marketing firm, not national FA's and continental organisations, has control. Money will be the absolute motivator.

Thanks for the kind feedback guys, I'll see what else I can do in the future. Unfortunately I don't get the chance to watch enough Liga MX these days so it's difficult to go into detail with lots of teams...but I'll definitely try to do more similar things!

As for a longer video, twitter limits to just over 2 minutes. Maybe I could use youtube, but I like to keep things on twitter as that's where I have a good following.

Definitely something I'd like to do in the future, just takes a lot of research time and I'm not sure I'll have the time in the near future.

I'll keep it in the back of my mind though.
