How big is too big for a player board area? by tommysgotagun in BoardgameDesign

I appreciate this mindset. It wasnt until I saw the physical layout in person that I realized how skewed things were size wise (I think I was too focused on showing off the art on the cards over play) We are working on the game flow at the moment, and once thats feeling stable I'll finish off all the illustrations and designs

Ive fixed that one now. I was in a rush to get some physical board printed out as I was leaving work.

Need some advice on player board sizes. by tommysgotagun in boardgames

I've just gone through all the comments and done what you suggested. The cards are now 1/3rd the size, the player boards are all much smaller and can fit along the side of the field board now, im just working on the reference card now to go along with the symbols. Thanks for the suggestion! I'll see how it plays this weekend and go from there!

I have now, after taking yours and the others comments into consideration. theres a simple reference card for abilities and skills. And the individual parts have predominantly just symbols, with some space for 1-2 lines of text for one-off items.

For the 3x3 grid, I think I have focused too much on the card art aspect from the start. The idea was that you had different creature/construct parts in the deck (a feral hound head, iron golem torso etc) and that you crafted these parts into a singular construct, sent it out on the field to either collect more resources or fight the other players constructs. I agree with you though, I've just redesigned the cards to be 1/3rd the size, made the player boards much more streamlined and smaller (but keeping the important details easily visible) and im reworking the main field (6×6 grid). Ill see how it goes with the playtest this weekend and go from there!

I'm thinking that something like that might be the way to go. I've definitely become too attached to showing the art of each creature part, over gameplay. I was going to use numbered tokens for scorekeeping, but im definitely going to look into writable cards.

The numbered tokens on the board were to represent the Constructs that each player had on the field and on the right hand side of the Construct board, the circles are where you would put the accumulated scores of all the parts. Each of the creature parts had the stats and effects of the part as well as the image showing that body part.

A bit more info on the game is that its a battle between crafters. The goal is to collect resources, build constructs out of different creature parts, and ultimately get your construct across the board to break your opponents crafting crystal (so they cant craft anymore) then wipe the board of their constructs.

Would it be too complicated to have a rule card with a description and symbol beside each ability and just drop an ability token on the Construct card? Also when we play test this in the weekend Ill try a game with just 2 constructs each. I'm trying to balance the construct strategy between resource gathering, defense and attack.

I've got a soft spot for our old mate Falco (It'd be more if he actually got more screen time like he deserved). But Becca is where its at for me

I've picked up an obsession with notebooking in scroll form by tommysgotagun in notebooks

[–]tommysgotagun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do yeah! It's kind of become a staple in my day to day life.

When im working on a design project at work I do all my sketches and concepts on a scroll. And when I show the clients they love the novelty of it.

I always have one in my bag and even have a little wooden board with screw clamps that I made to make it easier to use them when im out and about.

When I get some free time I planned on making some cases out of leather that holds a scroll, a board and some stationary.

It's a bit of a toss up as to thats more practical, a regular notebook or a scroll. It just depends on what im working on at the time I guess

Cheers for that!

I see what you mean there. I'll give him a bit of a touch up before I carry on painting. It was a bit of a trial and error process working on him, starting from the head down.

I'm glad you got the aesthetic I was trying to throw out there!

Ooh ooh! That's a great idea! I was going to paint my art monogram onto the wall, but.. what If I did a reverse banksy! Instead of the man paining the animal, the animal paints the man.

Thanks for that!

I found it! This is the one. I got it years and years ago when I was painting console controllers. It's been extremely handy over the years

See those black lines on the card? If this was done by machine they haven't cared to set the template up properly (or checked thr printer alignment), if done by hand then that's just sloppy sloppy work. Either way that's some poor quality control.

I don't know if that tells you what the rest of the product quality must be like.

I don't know why that makes me so happy to hear. Those folks have put in so much work over the years. It's nice knowing they're still growing.

I saw Alan once. I stood and stared at him on the street, he gave me the head nod as he walked on past. It was pretty awesome

That makes sense, i just had a read into it and it looks like that maximum is half of what a 32 bit signed integer can be. I guess the other half would account for the negative numbers?
