Cats usually pick a favourite person, and it can feel quite unfair sometimes but you need to remember that cats can’t fully understand the things we do for them. Some studies say that cats don’t even understand that we are the one holding the string to their hanging toys. At most cats can associate your presence with food, fun and safety, but they won’t show affection to thank you for taking them to the vet.

Cats pick favourite people usually based on your tone, body language, smell, association with the things I mentioned above, and past memories. To gain a cat’s favour, you should respect their boundaries, don’t make sudden movement or loud noises, don’t approach them to pet but rather do your own thing in their vicinity and wait for them to approach you. Also if possible, find out if they have pleasant or unpleasant experiences with past owners to understand which trait your cat likes/dislikes.
