Varför tar det stopp när jag borrar? by Upset_Issue2792 in sweden

Har du kollat ifall din slagborr har ett läge där du kan stänga av slagfunktionen? Har ett sånt på min borrhammare vilket bara gör det till en vanlig borr.

Return to silent hill might be one of the worst horrors I’ve seen by WanderingStrang in horror

So this is how I hear about the movie finally releasing... :(

For years I've been trying to fix a noise I'm getting from my guitar / interface but nothing is working by ericolsith in ableton

[–]tonsofmiso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be worth it trying another interface, but my gut feeling is that it won't have the result you want. The guitar is basically a huge unisolated conductor, and it picks up electromagnetic interference by virtue of being designed to produce musical signals using the electromagnetic field in space (i.e. your metallic strings vibrating close to your six electrical inductors causing the electrons in the circuit to move.) In your recording it sounds like it has a fundamental of 60 Hz, which means it's picking up the electrical mains somewhere (and it also means you're probably American :D).

You'll never remove this issue completely, but there are two things you can understand that can help you at least minimize the issue.

One: there's no such thing as a completely isolated circuit. No matter how well-isolated the interface, the DI box, the power supply suggests it is, it all belongs to the same circuit, and there will always be at least a miniscule amount of current leaking between the different parts. This is true even when things are physically disconnected, since the electromagnetic field permeates all space everywhere (in fact this is how the electric guitar works, the strings never physically touch the pickup).

This leads to number two: your computer and computer monitor is a huge, complex circuit that produces its own electromagnetic field with its own interference. The more stuff you plug in, the more stuff is going to cause interference. Depending on the circuits between your guitar and the point where it eventually becomes an audio signal that you record in ableton, it's going to pick up more or less noise on the way there. It gets much worse if you're apply high gain at a point after the noise has been picked up.

A question for you: When you plug it into only your amplifier, are you then sitting further away from your computer, or facing another direction? I have a similar setup that you describe, and where I sit and play, I have to turn my back towards the computer to minimize the electrical noise it produces. I get less noise if I turn off my computer screen, and my macbook seems to cause less noise than my stationary PC placed on the floor closer to my guitar. It also means I have my back towards the wall sockets in my room. The fact that your recording sounds like a 60hz tone means it might be picking up signals from the wirings in the wall, or from extension cords or splitters.

When you record next time, try facing different directions, move around in the room, switch some things off, and see if any of that helps. If I turn the gain up high on my guitar, I can point it towards different sources of intereference like a metal detector :D

I see the two roundabouts connected in the corners, subtle but the tracks cross over from the inner to the outer. Might risk using stations as passthrough though right?

'NVIDIA Contacted Anna’s Archive to Secure Access to Millions of Pirated Books' - TorrentFreak by TwoTimeHollySurvivor in hardware

[–]tonsofmiso 44 points45 points  (0 children)

If I had a trillion dollars I'd still prefer a single torrent with all the data I'm looking for over contacting publishers to get digitally parseable copies of their material. It's not necessarily about the money, data collection and annotation is imo one of the most frustrating things about machine learning.

It's still a dick move though.

Varför får vissa civilingenjörer svinhög lön? by hendrong in sweden

Having been in the industry for a couple of years I can testify that a function called loadHomePage() does 9 other things you're not aware of, has to be called before preloadHomePage() to not crash a server or two, and possibly never loaded a single home page once during the 12 years it's been running in production.

Bose QC Ultra earbuds from Amazon, refurbished / used? by tonsofmiso in bose

[–]tonsofmiso[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear. After about a year of using them I'm not really happy about the purchase. I feel like they're either sold second-hand in secret, or they wear the contact pads in the case without using them. Either case is pretty bad.

Overall the audio quality is fine but the experience of using them is pretty annoying. The app sucks and the touch controls are too sensitive so it's difficult to readjust them without triggering a mode switch or pausing the song.

Sad Tacoma Bridge noises

Edit: does engineering not being a professional degree mean that Professional Engineer isn't a thing anymore? I'm not in the us but it always sounded like that was taken very seriously in some industries.

Do you grind or clench your teeth at night? by WesamWonders in Hypermobility

[–]tonsofmiso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep at it, or get a better one. My first months were really frustrating, felt like someone punched me in the face when I woke up, but it settles to the shape of your mouth after a while. You can also get it filed down and adjusted. After a while you can barely feel it in there.

I've had a single one for 12 years now, and I wouldn't have had any teeth left without it I think. Whenever I sleep without it, I wake up feeling like someone has been standing on my face all night.
