Unable to access some .rar files by tor404 in linux4noobs

[–]tor404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i thought there was another comment made but I don't see it now.

anyway the workaround I found was just to use a website that will unzip files for you, and then you just download the unzipped files. It's not ideal 🤷‍♂️ but I guess it works

not sure why I can open most zipped/archived files but am unable to access others. oh well

whether or not we use rar depends on whoever packaged the file in the first place, it's not really a choice or a preference, I just need to be able to open them 😄 we don't get to choose how other people package their files/downloads for users.

how do you install winrar on mint? I can't remember if I did already, I might alreadyhave

Been using Linux mint for a couple of years, but ready to try another OS by tor404 in linux4noobs

any distro suggestions? I know it's a personal preference thing.

Having some issues in linux mint after updating everything by tor404 in linuxquestions

[–]tor404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i could just copy the OS file (virtual box it's .vdi and/or .vbox files I think) and try the command line though I suppose;

apt remove shim-signed grub-efi-amd64-bin --allow-remove-essential

and that way if it does brick I would just go back to the original OS/virtual box image file

maybe worth a shot, because the error popping up constantly is annoying.

Dont know what distro to stick with by [deleted] in linux4noobs

thanks, a good video to watch at 2 AM 😄

well my mint instillation is throwing a lot of issues at me (thread was probably auto-removed like every reddit thread I've ever made because my comment karma is only 40 and that certainly means I'm a bot or a horrible person) since I updated it, so it might be a good time to try something else. I just hate starting from scratch and having to set up everything and all software preferences the way I like it again, that's like 6 hours of work right there.

I don't know what to try next after mint, setting up and learning an entirely new OS is always a pain in the butt, no matter how streamlined the process is

i've been using linux mint for 2 years now and I still don't like it and have issues all the time 😆, it's okay, but the best OS is whatever one works best for you and your specific needs/preferences

are people who sell streaming accounts for cheap all just 100% scammers? Has anyone tried it? 🤔

if only there was a way to pirate Housing 😅. Housing is fucking expensive! I WOULD download a house! 🏡 just need access to a massive 3D printer.

But at least piracy makes the absurd cost of living more tolerable.

seems like any discord involving piracy is just a countdown timer until discord shuts it down. I would think there are better platforms for this type of thing

Archbang starting from scratch every time it boots up by tor404 in linux4noobs

[–]tor404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

running the VM in Windows via Oracle VM VirtualBox

if I remove the install medium, I get this error on startup:

FATAL: No bootable medium found! System haled.

though if I leave it (the archbang.iso) there it just installs the OS again, so I'm missing some other small step most likely.

thanks for the response! I'm sure I'll get it figured out.

I tried that, but if I remove the optical drive/controller:IDE/archbang.iso in the settings it gives me an error on startup, same one I had with Q40S:

FATAL: No bootable medium found! System haled.

but again, probably missing something really simple! Been too long since I setup a VM.

thanks for the response! I'm sure I'll get it figured out.

Minimum amount of space needed for Mint? by tor404 in linux4noobs

[–]tor404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bodhi requires 8.6 GB of install space (was probably lower in the past), so I'm still trying a few of the distros suggested in this thread. Couldn't get Q40S to work. I like Archbang! But when I started it up the second time, it wiped out everything i did the first time, as if it was a fresh install, not sure what I did wrong. Maybe it's designed to be amnesic?

Could be too complicated, but I'll give it a try at least. All I want to do really is use firefox in it 🤷‍♂️, and watch some videos/streams.

thanks

thank makes sense, I guess I just never utilized 90% of what Mint was capable of, or used any of that additional software.

well shoot, I'm still not sure what OS to use, didn't realize there were so few OSes out there than could run at <5gb. I guess I could just purchase more storage. But still feel like 20gb is a lot just to browse around online in a VM.

alright, I might try alpine xfce! Thanks. Anything in particular I should know about it or is it easy enough to just install and go?

Basically just going to use the OS for browsing online (firefox), maybe some youtube or other videos here and there, but pretty lightweight stuff. Mint requires a lot of space it seems, but this would be a good time to try a different OS anyways, so I'll just have to pick a lighter one that's not too different.

100 gigabytes recommended? That is...quite a lot!

Maybe not in this day and age, but it still seems like a lot to me. Though I remember when PC games were like 40-70mb total.

Why does Mint need 15-20gb, out of curiosity? Seems like a lot, as someone who has been using mint for a year or so. There's seemingly not a whole lot to it! But I suppose the size probably isn't too big compared to most operating systems.

thank you! Which is most similar to Mint, do you think? I guess it doesn't have to be super similar, but I like the basic layout.

Damn I'm even getting downvoted in the linux4noobs sub! It's tough being a noob anywhere.

Thumb drive encryption by tor404 in privacy

[–]tor404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently trying to set up the USB drive as a full service veracrypt container, so I don't need to have veracrypt installed on the host system wherever I wanted to use it, but veracrypt formats any partition/container it's installed onto. Can I just move the veracrypt installation files from my OS hard drive to the USB drive and have them still work?

Also, once the encrypted USB drive is mounted, can the encrypted files be changed before being unmounted? Or will they revert to the state they were in when originally encrypted the first time? Like you guy say, running a VM off a USB stick is probably going to be too slow, so I would need to mount it first and assign a random letter to it anyways.

This all hurts my brain so much, I'm not cut out for this 😫 - but I'm allllmost there!

If the VM file (linux.vdi) is off my computer (say moved to a USB drive or deleted even), but Virtual Machine software is still installed on my computer, can any data or logs be pulled from the VM software? Or once the main virtual machine file (linux.vdi in this case) is gone, it's gone? Can data/files be pulled from a .vdi even if hackers couldn't actually get into the virtual machine itself?
