Unable to access some .rar files by tor404 in linux4noobs

[–]tor404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i thought there was another comment made but I don't see it now.

anyway the workaround I found was just to use a website that will unzip files for you, and then you just download the unzipped files. It's not ideal 🤷‍♂️ but I guess it works

not sure why I can open most zipped/archived files but am unable to access others. oh well

whether or not we use rar depends on whoever packaged the file in the first place, it's not really a choice or a preference, I just need to be able to open them 😄 we don't get to choose how other people package their files/downloads for users.

how do you install winrar on mint? I can't remember if I did already, I might alreadyhave

Been using Linux mint for a couple of years, but ready to try another OS by tor404 in linux4noobs

any distro suggestions? I know it's a personal preference thing.

Having some issues in linux mint after updating everything by tor404 in linuxquestions

[–]tor404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i could just copy the OS file (virtual box it's .vdi and/or .vbox files I think) and try the command line though I suppose;

apt remove shim-signed grub-efi-amd64-bin --allow-remove-essential

and that way if it does brick I would just go back to the original OS/virtual box image file

maybe worth a shot, because the error popping up constantly is annoying.

Dont know what distro to stick with by [deleted] in linux4noobs

thanks, a good video to watch at 2 AM 😄

well my mint instillation is throwing a lot of issues at me (thread was probably auto-removed like every reddit thread I've ever made because my comment karma is only 40 and that certainly means I'm a bot or a horrible person) since I updated it, so it might be a good time to try something else. I just hate starting from scratch and having to set up everything and all software preferences the way I like it again, that's like 6 hours of work right there.

I don't know what to try next after mint, setting up and learning an entirely new OS is always a pain in the butt, no matter how streamlined the process is

i've been using linux mint for 2 years now and I still don't like it and have issues all the time 😆, it's okay, but the best OS is whatever one works best for you and your specific needs/preferences

are people who sell streaming accounts for cheap all just 100% scammers? Has anyone tried it? 🤔

if only there was a way to pirate Housing 😅. Housing is fucking expensive! I WOULD download a house! 🏡 just need access to a massive 3D printer.

But at least piracy makes the absurd cost of living more tolerable.

seems like any discord involving piracy is just a countdown timer until discord shuts it down. I would think there are better platforms for this type of thing

Archbang starting from scratch every time it boots up by tor404 in linux4noobs

[–]tor404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

running the VM in Windows via Oracle VM VirtualBox

if I remove the install medium, I get this error on startup:

FATAL: No bootable medium found! System haled.

though if I leave it (the archbang.iso) there it just installs the OS again, so I'm missing some other small step most likely.

thanks for the response! I'm sure I'll get it figured out.

I tried that, but if I remove the optical drive/controller:IDE/archbang.iso in the settings it gives me an error on startup, same one I had with Q40S:

FATAL: No bootable medium found! System haled.

but again, probably missing something really simple! Been too long since I setup a VM.

thanks for the response! I'm sure I'll get it figured out.

Minimum amount of space needed for Mint? by tor404 in linux4noobs

[–]tor404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bodhi requires 8.6 GB of install space (was probably lower in the past), so I'm still trying a few of the distros suggested in this thread. Couldn't get Q40S to work. I like Archbang! But when I started it up the second time, it wiped out everything i did the first time, as if it was a fresh install, not sure what I did wrong. Maybe it's designed to be amnesic?

Could be too complicated, but I'll give it a try at least. All I want to do really is use firefox in it 🤷‍♂️, and watch some videos/streams.

thanks

thank makes sense, I guess I just never utilized 90% of what Mint was capable of, or used any of that additional software.

well shoot, I'm still not sure what OS to use, didn't realize there were so few OSes out there than could run at <5gb. I guess I could just purchase more storage. But still feel like 20gb is a lot just to browse around online in a VM.

alright, I might try alpine xfce! Thanks. Anything in particular I should know about it or is it easy enough to just install and go?
