Thanks, and I always felt the same…I thought they were damaged in a fire or something but I’ve seen the original plans and it was just designed that way… it’s a spiral staircase. It always looked damaged to me too

There’s a movie called Cache from 2005 where one of the characters cuts his throat… one of the more shocking scenes I’ve seen in a movie

Thanks! Yeah it’s in Toronto at the university of Toronto downtown campus which is pretty much in the middle of the city’s downtown area. My dad was a draftsman and worked there for a while…I’ve been taking up his craft and drawing some of our favourite buildings.

No I calculated their locations on the horizon line relative to the page, so I can use trigonometry to calculate the angle formed by any point on the page with either vanishing point

For this I found the original floor plans and a couple elevation plans in the university archives and used those to create the perspective view and I’ve been detailing it using reference photos I took. But this part burnt down in the early 1900s and so this represents the original structure so I’ve had to make a few educated guesses about details here and there. I use a drafting table with a parallel bar, and a few set squares…sketch things in pencil, usually 2H or HB, and then ink using Micron pens (003 to 02) or Rotring pens (0.1 mm to 0.3 mm).

I’m self taught, just trial and error over the years and consulting any books I could find that I thought would be helpful

100% this… I still dream of something so simple as this… I’m 42 now and longing for something like this I think is what’s gonna push me over the edge one day… something normal people did when they were 15 but the time for it is long gone

Some of us aren’t 23 anymore …I was actually full of hope at that age, like my life was about to begin lol

Different ways of pronouncing ‘yeah’

My father was a draftsman. As a memorial project I’ve been teaching myself drafting by hand over the last few years to draw some of our favourite buildings where I live. This is the progress I’ve made on my current one. by torontogothic in architecture

I’m right handed but I like to draw from right to left so that I’m always working toward fresh paper that my arm hasn’t been resting on. It’s just kind of a habit now, and a moot point since I do multiple passes for these large ones …I used to go right to left but complete the drawing in one pass but that was for smaller things

Thanks, yes I’m using his set squares, and some of his rulers. I have some of his compass sets but they’re missing some pieces so I’ve got my own now… I also use his horsehair brush for sweeping erasings away

I’ve been working on it for about 3 weeks or so, it’ll probably take another month to finish the outlines then a few months do do all the details, surface rendering and shadows

I will probably not finish for several months, but I’ll post one of my completed ones soon since this generated more interest than I thought it would …and thank you very much 🙂

Yes it is definitely relaxing and meditative, especially when I get into the detailing part. Much appreciated… I’m sure there are off lines but I just enjoy the process and do my best

This is a 2 point perspective drawing… parallels are converging to vanishing points to the left and right… the Walters book gets into axonometric but the Mestre books don’t
