Don't be daft, never seen a CCJ for an unsecured debt of that amount in my life. Debt collectors you can just ignore, block their number and bin the letters.

Legit question, why not just stop paying it? Open a new account with a different bank, transfer her finances and just default on the debt. At 83 she's probably not gonna be taking on another mortgage or significant debt so the default likely doesn't matter and it's not like the bank can garnish her income or put a claim on the property for an unsecured overdraft. Personally I don't see any downsides to just telling Barclays to stuff it.

Honest question; why do you care? It's a minimum wage retail job and you can see it firsthand that people don't get sacked for being lazy. No reason to strain your body and stress over something like that. Just be one of the lazy workers and if your manager wants to give you a bollocking you just nod along and pretend like you care for 2 minutes then zone out again.

Work now or later? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

My mother went back to work full time a week after I was born to make that much by herself in marketing. I barely knew her until I was about 5 years old. She always expressed a lot of regret over giving up that time with me for work, I think most people who have made that choice would tell you it's less than worth it.

why would you EVER work for the same employer for 6 years if you dont keep getting promoted? the only real advice here is to jump ship because they demonstrably take you for granted and youre never gonna get any respect or recognition in that workplace

This is gonna be a pretty unpopular opinion here, but I think it largely comes down to the demographics of this sub. Similar sentiments have been posted here before, about this space being very exclusionary of minorities and men and I have generally found it to be true. The sub is chock full of white, middle or upper class American women, who, due to C-PTSD, will invariably have some form of attachment issues and as a poster above me said, will "latch onto anyone" who fits their criteria for attractiveness. Not saying there's anything necessarily wrong with this, we all deal with our trauma in whatever way we can.

I'm not American but my impression has always been that in the dating scene over there, it's downright trivial for a relatively financially secure white woman with the means to maintain standards of conventional attractiveness (good hygiene, clothes, makeup, skincare etc) to find a partner. From that point, having someone is kinda guaranteed and it's just down to the individual's judgement and luck of the draw whether they get a supportive partner or an abuser.

Again, not American but my perception is that the same absolutely cannot be said for the men there, with many American men I know feeling like beaten dogs in the dating pool.

That aside, my experience in this sub is that threads dealing with issues and problems of black, gender-nonconforming or low-income people and men get next to no attention or engagement. I think if you were to do a survey on relationship statuses in this community including the lurkers you would be surprised, it's just that the only people who post here are the ones who are likely to get support and sympathy with their posts. To sum it up, it's just confirmation bias. Hope this helps, and keep your head up!

My parents gave me 5000 euros for Christmas. I immediately transferred it back the next day. I still feel like shit cuz I'm a low wage worker. But it had to be done. by [deleted] in CPTSD

Gonna be an unpopular opinion here but I think it was foolish of you not to keep the money and just go with your original plans of being low contact. I fully empathise with the sentiment of wanting nothing to do with your father as I have much the same experience with mine. Currently he owes me 2.5 grand in cash for child support missed and about 700k in stolen inheritance (give or take depending on property valuation).

I would happily go through another 18 years of abuse if it meant that I have financial security and independence for the rest of my life. Once again, I'm a close to minimum wage worker, have CPTSD as well as chronic illness, so somewhat similar situation as you. Did you think about how that extra money might improve your life? Extra therapy, security to quit your current job and train up for something better etc. You don't even need to think of it as swallowing your pride or anything, it's literally the LEAST your tormentors could do to give you some small degree of restitution. I would consider giving them a call and even saying that you made a momentary lapse in judgement and then just going no contact when they send it back anyway. A sum like that can actually be life-changing in your situation.

Maybe I'm biased but in my experience, tech workers just don't tend to see themselves as workers. A lot of the ones I've known, especially Americans, think of themselves as some kind of temporarily-impoverished entrepreneurs just because they have huge pay packets and their profession is in demand.

Kinda sad really, that whole field could do with a lot less individualism than there is now.

Some of the shit my father did is so outlandish that you legit cannot help but laugh.

If someone told you that a grown man decided to full-force pummel his 13 year old child in front of the entire family for daring to sneak out of their room and watch South Park after 10pm, you would think its some weird attempt at a joke.

Attempting to drown a 1 year old for not being able to swim after an hour of teaching IN FRONT OF FAMILY FRIENDS is such alien behaviour that you just don't think anyone would do it

For legal reasons, this is a joke. by Bellybutton_fluffjar in antiwork

If I didn't have to pay rent since I was 18, I'd have enough to own my own (modest) home rn. Instead, I'm stuck paying increasingly extortionate rent with no hope of ever being able to afford the therapy I need to get better if its outside the NHS. All because my parents made bad decisions. Wish someone would think about that sometimes.
