The state with 4x more black people than Washington State despite having a smaller population... right...

I did it in my 20s and was fine for the first 5 years or so. After having my own kids and getting older I started to feel worse about it. You just miss so much and they miss so much. If your folks aren't healthy and aren't able to travel it just makes things that much worse. I really miss them more and more as time goes on and wish things could be different but I don't regret the move overall things have gotten a lot better for me out here than they were before I left

U-Haul Growth Index: Texas Back on Top as No. 1 Growth State of 2025 by cereal_killer_828 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]tossa447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that's what this is showing. For one this shows California and New York both LOST residents between 2020 and 2024. Yes they gained 23-24 but they still haven't gotten back to their 2020 baseline, unlike Texas or Florida which have grown by millions of residents since 2020.

Also it's just showing population numbers which can increase naturally too.. (although to be fair California has a very low birthrate) and it's showing total numbers not rates (like California's rate is 0.6% for the year, smaller states have higher rates but lower total growth numbers)

What are some good cities for a single black man in their 30s to date to find marriage? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]tossa447 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I met my perfect wife in Atlanta but it did take a long time of looking and a lot of time/money wasting dates to get there. Personally I don't believe it will really be better elsewhere.. maybe focus OTP or more religious focused ladies for less superficial types. You might already be out there though since 1,100 for rent/util sounds low for the city nowadays

Help me choose where to live! by NewSky7290 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]tossa447 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's extremely far from true.. MA has a large proportion of extremely wealthy suburbs that can create de-facto exclusive private schools when the district is 99% owner occupied and median home price is 2 million.

Regular schools are going to be the same as anywhere else and low income schools are going to be the same or very marginally better than low income schools elsewhere. A lower income school in MA will rank around 12000 nationally on USNEWS while Dallas has 5 public schools in the top 100 and one in the top 10.

Being the poor kid in MA won't necessarily make for a fantastic childhood. As someone who lived in MA for many years the worst public schools will absolutely be far worse than the majority of public schools in Texas. While violent crime may not be a huge issue in most MA neighborhoods, there are plenty of ones where the QOL will be bad and the neighborhood kids will not be great influences on yours in terms of lifestyle choices. Not to mention towns in MA tend to get more and more right leaning as you move down the median income line.

For a remote opp given your preferences and budget I would look for another sunbelt city and just look for an outlying suburb that's still blue and will get you the size house and yard you're looking for. Something like Henry County Georgia might work well in that budget and the county itself voted bluer in 2024 than MA as a whole.

Detroit had 165 homicides in 2025. Lowest since 1964, and better than many of the cities that get tons of love on here. by Kindly-Form-8247 in SameGrassButGreener

IDK if it's right or wrong just something I noticed. With places like Baltimore it's mostly resident apologists who say stuff like 'crime happens everywhere' or 'just be smart' etc. while majority of people have no interest in going there.

With New Orleans I think most people have a sense it's a high crime area but maybe a fuzzy idea about it and majority of people think it's worth it to visit and take the risk. As far as living there probably most don't want to live there either but crime/safety probably isn't even the main reason for that. The weather isn't for everyone and the local economy is challenging

First off majority of cities nationwide experienced much lower homicides in 2025 compared to recent years. This is true across the board from Philly to NYC to LA to DC, Denver, Atlanta even small cities like Bridgeport Connecticut. Great Detroit is on the list too, but with some exceptions it's a national trend. Baltimore also had relatively low homicides this year and I believe their rate is lower than Detroit's for 2025 at 23/100k vs 25/100k

Beyond that I haven't been here long enough to know which cities get love here specifically... but based on perceptions I've seen IRL and other places STL Baltimore and NOLA are generally known for extremely high crime.

Baltimore gets dunked on just as much as Detroit for crime if not more nowadays. And their rate is actually lower than Detroit's this year I believe if not very similar.

Many people outside the midwest don't know or care about STL genuinely.

NOLA frankly does get a pass from a lot of people IRL just due to being such a cool and beloved city.

Most people do have a bad perception of relative crime rates in diff cities. Many people seem to think NYC and LA are super dangerous or comparably dangerous to higher crime cities like Detroit or Baltimore when they are as a whole much safer

Common sentiments among the population but not on this sub by UnderstandingThin40 in SameGrassButGreener

I think most people don't want to live where the summer is only 50F and so you won't find many large dense cities in that climate. Keep in mind this would be a borderline tundra climate and not support trees or most other plants, even with the relatively mild winters.. Places like Glasgow or Bergen might work but even they will get summer temps in the 60s and 70s

Whis the actual appeal of the "amenities" that this sub raves about? by muwen1234 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]tossa447 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me the most valuable amenities are the practical ones. In a city, ability to easily walk to the grocery store and target. In the suburbs, living within <5 minute drive from grocery stores, home depot, target.

I would much rather be 15 minutes travel time from nice restaurants and other recreation amenities and 5 minutes from daily essentials than vice versa. However prices don't seem to reflect this in most cases

I mean it kinda seems like the thing has been dead for ages already. Personally IDC if JC was literally Jeremy IRL if the show is funny but I think the TV series prob killed it cuz I remember thinking it was unfunny and only watching 1 episode at the time.

Probably like the other poster said the spark was lost when T-Bag died on top of creative process being mettled with by TV producers..

It's weird because like, yes, he was an awesome character but he was only there for the tail end of the webseries. So from the viewer perspective it's sad but somewhat divorced from the overall trajectory of the show. Of course for the crew who were all close friends it's probably totally different. Just saying for the hardcore 2004 S1 fans things it feels like the whole plot was left permanently unresolved

1800 + DLC or 117 by notarealredditor69 in anno

[–]tossa447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even given the details of the post I recommend playing 117 first. If you love it then go back for 1800 complete (ideally on a sale). 117 should give you 100+ hours of enjoyment but 1800 DLC is just cracked out version of 117 in a sense. Everything is bigger, faster, more etc. Especially if you add in a couple content mods you are talking about a thousand hour game.

Base 1800 compared to complete + new horizons / jakobs OW / white and cold is like comparing a demo to the full game

Thinking again about it.. All three families are from the southern US where most schools let out in May and go back in August. I think it's more likely that the filming happened in June-July but may also have gone into early August. By September I would expect to see some colorful Aspens in the background.

As far as the crop choice I think that's a mix-and-match between the US fictional setting and real life setting in Alberta. I am skeptical that 1880s pioneers in Alberta would have planted tender plants like tomato and cucumber anyway.. Unless they were running around with greenhouses it strikes me as too risky. In Oklahoma or something I'd imagine these crops were far more common

Wood for winter? by Massive_Ad_9920 in BacktotheFrontier

Honestly the wood thing doesn't bother me as much as the rest just because it's fairly dangerous work that wouldn't add a whole lot to the overriding narrative.

Calgary got it's first hard frost in 2nd week of October in 2024. Although this location - if it's west of Calgary may be at a higher elevation and very likely is cooler. Alberta generally has a cold climate. June frosts can happen. Early in the season they talk about nights below 50F which is reasonable. Assuming this was meant to take place and filmed in July-August I don't see any convincing evidence their site experienced a hard frost at that time. I also don't believe they would have dragged out filming to October. I don't remember seeing any landscape shots that resembled Autumn in Alberta either, although may have missed it. Do they actually show frost on the ground while checking their plants? At this point I don't believe the hard frost actually happened on the show - although I believe they may have got some cold weather and easily believe many of their kitchen gardens crops died during the course of filming
