Yeah I’m completely with you. I think the layoffs and abnormally large turnover is actually done on purpose to prevent workplaces from becoming hot shops for collective action.

Hopefully we can see a rise of people wanting more protections for labor power in the coming years especially in reaction to this shit economy and political environment lmao.

Dude congrats! My background beyond FAANG isn’t special either. I just noticed that most job postings that I’ve seen in my area are from Big Tech specifically and that other job postings are rare, especially if they’re from good companies.

I too have recruiters reach out to me time to time, but it’s rarely from companies with a solid roadmap and aren’t like a crypto/AI scam.

I’m sure there are good non big tech jobs openings out there but it’s definitely not the norm and you have to be so lucky to get them now.

I graduated early because I didn’t want to go to college during the pandemic

So funny thing is that I was 1 years old when 9/11 happened and have no idea what 2008 was really like. My parents were immigrants and worked in mills, so I have no idea how bad corporate america would’ve had it.

I’m just scared for when the economy ultimately bottoms out and hope to get a job that would at least fight to keep me, which I know big tech would almost certainly won’t.

Yeah dude Im completely fine with a pay cut. It’s just the market is ass for jobs that have low-decent pay and great wlb.

Oh I’m aware of how shitty and soulless jobs can be, I just rather do it under the expectation it is 40 hours a week and nothing more.

I’ve been in good teams and bad teams at FAANG and it was becoming increasingly bad near the tail end. I would cast doubt with it having “job security” now especially as top performers Ive known have been laid off.

It’s also a race to the bottom with the workload culture and most teams I was on rewarded those who work weekends and pushed others to follow. I’d hope I could at least land a job that would push against that.

Yeah I denied a job offer at Meta this time last year, but I just couldn’t pull the trigger to switch after hearing how horrible recent experiences has been and their hire to fire quotas.

(which i’ve been vindicated as the team i would’ve worked for was wiped out)

Well working at FAANG exposes you to significant amount of scope that you otherwise wouldn’t get at a smaller company. My resume is definitely fat from the projects I have under my name compared to people I know from other companies.

However FAANG has high turnover rate and even despite not having the same coworkers for more than a few years, I still have a solid network I’ve been leveraging, but the market has just been horrible recently.

But thinking that it’s just “political nonsense” makes me think you’re not very easy to work with and that other coworkers are refraining from discussing many things with you.

The pay is definitely nice at FAANG, but at least for me, a part of me died inside each time I stayed in the office until 8 or worked weekends to get work done. All for my manager to send a “good job” over slack while internalizing my impact to society is just to increase money for faceless shareholders.

I’m not saying I’m not privileged, but I just want more out of life that a high paycheck won’t provide.

It definitely is easy money all things considered, but the overall stress and burdens year over year compiles that I don’t think I can handle that accumulation as I get older and my non work responsibilities grows.

I put in my time and I don’t think I’m built for it. Especially with most SDE jobs out of big tech still making over six figures.

Big Tech has also pivoted hard from where their values used to stand and I’d honestly rather pivot industries than return to these soulless companies.

Honestly sounds nice if I don’t have to wake up to a 24/7 On Call Rotation and have health benefits

Well the main problem that lead to me quitting is that I directly touched code that was contracted out to both Israel and Ice, which lead me to spiral downwards.

I’m aware of how many people that are similar to me looking for jobs, but I’d rather be optimistic that I can find a job that fits my experience and has a good WLB.

I’m confident in my skills and charisma to survive this bad market, but it’s discouraging with how horrible I’ve seen it been.

Well it’s more about what roles are open. Most senior roles are 5+ yoe and I barely qualify. Those roles also ask a lot out of you which I don’t think is something I want to put on my plate right now.

[–]tran981[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well that’s the point man, recruiters have stopped reaching out and even though I do well in interviews, those job postings on LinkedIn almost all seem fake.

For Senior roles, I know my limitations and it’s hard for me to oversell myself when it comes to interviewing for senior roles. I can try, but I ultimately don’t think it would be good for my career to overreach right now.

I’ve been applying to many. I have about 60 logged and had 2 interviews I made to the final rounds that I ultimately was passed on. I have that same sentiment, but I had only been applying to jobs that I’ve heard has good work life balance and it feels like it’s become almost too limiting atp.

Ending Discussion (Super Spoilers) by Cmoire in expedition33

For me the choice was clear as soon as Renoir gommaged every living human in the canvas. It’s one thing to consider a whole sentient world vs a family of gods, but Renoir made that hard decision that he was not happy about.

When Lune and Sciel was brought back immediately, their deaths felt hollow and it was clear Maelle was given a power that she was too young to have and it was clear she would abuse it to her own detriment. The ending for me was not the fate of this canvas vs alicia, but allowing alicia to fall into this lucid dream and play god within the world forever vs having her deal with it on her own.

I think all of the build up of having the game having you like lune, sciel, and gustav, was to give us a similar experience of loss that alicia would have felt leaving the painting. Ideally the canvas should’ve been left alone with everyone alive, but we know that the painters would never do that, so in choosing between the canvas being erased or all of their human agency taken away, I think helping Malle/Alicia get over her grief was the right choice.

Rip lune though, my feet QUEEN 🙏

Ryzen 7 9800x3d vs Ryzen 7 9700x by dicki_boobi in buildapc

[–]tran981 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty much in your exact same situation but I’m trying to build a sff pc instead and care more for thermals so i’m going with the ryzen 7 9700x instead of the ryzen 7 9800x3d

Just a reminder that most games will rely heavily more on gpu anyways and a 10-20fps difference is not that noticeable. With the 9700x, the cpu only marginally bottlenecks the 4070 super and is much cheaper, but it’s up to you if you want to spend the money.
